Currently have the Hisense U6G, great image quality, great sound, but the internal storage is only 4GB which gets full quickly especially with Kodi. Should I upgrade my internal storage to 1TB with an external hard drive or should I get a Nvidia Shield Pro with 16GB and faster processor for Kodi?

You'll be better off going with something like the Nvidia or similar. You'll benefit from having a stand alone device that is designed to handle Kodi and whatever other programs you like to use. Not only will it be able to handle larger file sizes because of the extra RAM and the internal processing capabilities of the higher quality media boxes, you will also receive device support I'm the form of software and device updates more frequently without having to side load and bloat up your tv. Only drawbacks are the U6G not having E-ARC so there is no Dolby Vision/DTX:/True HD audio passthrough as the U6G only reads the Hi-Quality audio codecs from internal apps/sources. It will downplay the audio to Dolby Plus or something like that which most won't even notice but if you have a nice home theatre system that could be a drawback.

16 GB is not really a lot once you get the shield. So it will depend on what type of build of kodi you put on there and how big your library is. It should work if you just have a couple hundred movies or something. But speaking from experience everything this little box can do you will want to add storage. I will tell you right now don't stick a USB stick in the back of this thing. It is known to burn them up. Gets very hot. Use an external SSD because the wire keeps the heat from getting to it and adopt the storage as internal if you wish. You're probably going to want at least 128 GB. I use a 1 TB Samsung. But that's probably more than what most people need. I have a lot of games and apps. You will fill the internal storage up once you find out how powerful the shield is even though the chip is like 6 years old now. And before anybody says anything I know they updated the chip. But it's pretty much the same as the original 2015. It plays a lot of games very well and you can use any controller pretty much you want. Xbox PlayStation wired Bluetooth etc etc. I know that was long-winded but I hope that helps. Have a great day

It's very frustrating that these tv manufacturers put such little storage in the tv's. I have a Hisense 65H8G with only 20-25 apps installed and I can't update a few since it says I don't have the storage even though it says I have 1.4 GB free.
