TCL google tv - still sucks

by usagicassidy

I’ve had the TCL Series 6 55R646 since it came out (I even returned it once since it was so buggy, and then bought it again a few months later) and it has had a grand myriad of issues.

But the most prevalent one is that any time I open Disney+ - after watching some content or browsing the app, eventually it will make my tv go “black”. Meaning if I try to scroll I can’t see anything. If I turn the tv off and back on again, I still can’t see anything. The only solution is to manually unplug the tv and “restart” the whole thing and begin again. This happens 4-7 times a week.

Has anyone else experienced this? Does anyone else have a solution? It’s only ever happened to me I think 2 other times - on YouTube or something. But otherwise, without fail, it’s Disney+ and it forces me to unplug my tv.

TCL's firmware is absolute trash, do yourself a favor and get a box.

*TCL sucks

Their Roku TVs are so bad they blocked me on Twitter, because I kept tagging them in tweets about the bugs.

Why did you buy it again?

I don't use the built-in GoogleTV anymore, but I can reliably get that exact same issue to happen with another app (unplugging is the only solution). I wouldn't be surprised at all if it was happening with Disney+ occasionally.

Currently I use a CCwGTV plugged into the TV. This isn't a real solution, but you avoid almost all of the issues with the TV by doing this (I wish I had returned the TV when I had a chance).

With each update I try checking if I can remove the chromecast, and while things have improved, there are still plenty of issues.

I bought a 75P8M a couple of years ago.
It had a long list of issues;
Screen would go blank in some apps, it would turn on by itself randomly during the night, and it was very slow in the UI navigation.

After sending two techs, and trying multiple firmware releases, they agreed to refund,

I have the 75R646, I returned the first one… and wanted to return the second one but it’s such a hassle. But the first one had the dirty screen effect that was dark and looked like this ((())) during grey/white screens. Second one has it but not as bad, but the second one also has bright spots around the edges and one corner.

Biggest issue I have now is the jutter I get in apps. Like it’s low frame rate, usually in Disney +, but also have noticed it in Showtime and other apps.

If I didn’t buy the second one in store after returning the first, I would have returned it. But I got rid of the box and it would never survive the trip back to the store. Already chatted with Best Buy many times trying to get them to pick it up so it survived the trip to the store but they won’t do that.

I've the current gen 55S546. I pretty much gave up on using it as a smart TV. Even as a dumb TV it's buggy as hell. Like 1 out of 4 times the screen doesn't switch on when waking from stand by. CEC implementation is terrible, bad enough that I've switched it off.

Weird all the reviews say that the 6 series is a good TV. I always buy Sony never have any problems with them.

I have the same model, and got it about 2 weeks ago. I noticed the Disney+ issue, but only as of recent, where it's not as substantial. It just gives me an error code (9), to wait a bit and contact Disney+ if the issue persists. It definitely worked within the past two weeks, but I can confidently say I've never had to unplug it like that. I have modded mine, and sped up the OS, if that helps you

Had 2 tcl roku tvs and nothing ever glitches. However the Google tv locked me into watching family guy after I hit the continue watching on the the home screen. I can't scroll anywhere and if I click ok it pauses if I hit the back button screen goes black

The Roku version is even worse. I'm going to go ahead and post the screed I posted on the TCL site. If you hate this Chinese customer base rapist like I do, copy this post and throw it up anywhere you would like.

Let me tell you how DISGUSTED I am with my decision to purchase a Roku product. Over and Over again Roku purposefully and intentionally makes choices that disrespects it's customer base so thoroughly, that you'll feel the need to light a cigarette after. THE ONLY COMPANY WHO TAKES THE TIME TO ENSURE YOU HAVE TO USE THEIR BLUETOOTH SPEAKERS ONLY. Who does that? No, phone, laptop, desktop or tablet turns off Bluetooth to all but their own poorly engineered garbage tech. I am absolutely mortified when someone asks me what tv I play my Xbox games on. I often lie in order to not feel the shame I feel when I think that I gave this sheisty company dime one. I have a feeling their ENGRISH RANGWUGE algorithm will pull this post, but I will go straight from here to as many social media platforms I can find and post this diatribe against this Chinese company. A name synonymous with the defilement of its own customers. I've never run into such a shortsighted money grab in my 50 years as a High Tech consumer. A bad reputation in this industry is a death knell. I intend to spend my freetime from now on in making sure everyone is aware of what you think of your customers. I'm copying and pasting this as my Amazon review from where I made my purchase and I hope anyone who comes across it, copies and pastes it themselves. Certainly any poor soul who got duped by TCL should. Throw it up like a graffiti tag on any search return from a TCL site.

Could have told you this would be an issue - it's a TCL. They're notoriously SHIT. If you want a decent budget TV, buy a Hisense.
