Onn. 4k box intermittently dropping wi-fi signal?

by Nico_is_not_a_god

The Onn device would be perfect for my applications on paper, but after watching Twitch via Cast on it, it consistently drops to a message that says "something went wrong, try casting again" and disconnects from my Wi-Fi. It reconnects pretty soon after, automatically, but the interruption makes it completely unusable compared to the non-AndroidTV Chromecast V3 I'm trying to replace with it (mostly for SmartTubeNext).

Anyone else have issues with this device not staying connected to Wi-Fi? I've already returned one of these Onn 4k devices due to this problem, but the second one having the same problem seems like something to ask other users about. The device is approximately 4 feet away from my Wi-Fi router (Linksys Gigabit WRT1900ACS). I could get a split Ethernet/Power adapter dongle but I don't want to throw more money at this $20 thing if the issue can be fixed in software (and if I can get this one functioning perfectly, I want to replace the Chromecast that's in another room that won't be able to use a wired connection). The adapter people seem to be recommending for power + ethernet on this device is like $15 by itself.

EDIT: I figured it out in my case. No idea why, but the default DNS on the device are set to 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4, changed these to 9.9.9.9 and 1.1.1.1 and it hasn't thrown the error since.

Update AGAIN: I switched to Ethernet anyway, and the problem came back until I also changed the DNS settings off of Google DNS for the Ethernet connection.

I have not run into any WiFi issues, the device my daily driver. its connected on the 5 GHz connection.

Mine is rock stable on WiFi-never dropped connection. What device are you casting from? Might be the casting device and not the ONN. Did a quick check and there is a Twitch Android app-why not use that? I amazed at the ONN-much faster than my Roku Ultra and works with everything I tried.

Mine is on the opposite side of the room from my router and I have a solid connection that says "excellent" and it hasn't dropped once in over a month. I think you need to update your router's firmware, then make sure you are using the best WiFi channel and if that doesn't work, I'd be surprised. However, if your router is only 4 feet away from the Onn or any streaming device, there is no reason not to use Ethernet. I wish I could do that myself even if my WiFi works perfectly because my Gigabit router's Ethernet connection will always beat WiFi on stability.

You might want to try an Ethernet adapter.

I don't see that. Where did you find those settings?

One thing I noticed on streaming sticks/boxes, you're better off with a weak 5GHz signal than strong 2.4GHz one. Just delete the password on the 2.4Ghz.

Any idea how to get to those settings? I can't seem to be able to find them. All. I have under network is the wifi connections
