Nvidia shield pro versus Google Chromecast TV

by trollz0rz

I read so many posts or seen a bunch of videos comparing them with plex, and the shield pro looks faster obviously. But then I read tons of people on Reddit saying that it really makes no difference as far as browsing the UI or playback speed.

Any thoughts? My wife somehow put our Google TV Chromecast remote and a glass of water and now it's going nuts. I figured I'm going to have to buy a new one, and wondering if the extra $150 will give me the performance boost for UI. The Chromecast is so slow sometimes when browsing plex or even the Android TV home screen. I was hoping to hold out for a newer shield, but doesn't look like that's coming anytime soon.

The shield is awesome and i love mine, but it's basically running 7 year old hardware. The 2019 version is a bit faster and has few extras (Atmos etc), but it's still old hardware.

I'm still using my 2015 version and i'm waiting for a real new shield. It can't take years before they release it.

I would personally wait for the next shield and get the cheaper google tv and get a shield when they release a new one.

But still the shield is awesome 👍

I have 2 Shield Pros (2017) and one CCGTV, and more than likely I will never buy another Shield again because for $50 the CCGTV does pretty much everything I want. I just wish the CCGTV wouldnt automatically update apps, but thats the only thing. Even the remote is better than the 2017 and 2019 remotes.

I have a 2017 and a 2019 shield, the full powered one. I also have a CCWGTV. I the ccwgtv is an excellent performer for the money. The shield does handle some audio and video types better, but unless you really need the extra power it has, the ccwgtv is the better value. shield is the best, however.
As far as just using the UI itself, I don't really see any issues with either device? they are both pretty snappy from my experience. I am also a big fan of the shield AI-enchanced sharpening, however whether it'd be worth the extra cost for that only is pretty subjective.

I have 3 Shield Pro and they are great but on my tv i switched to CCwGTV i like to remote better and i don't see any diff. other than the price... would recomment buying the CCwGTV from someone that lets you return and test for your self

note: i get better security updates from CCwGTV

I've got three of each device (shield 2015, 2017, and ccwgtv) and have no issues with either.

However, the shield is much faster and doesn't lag on high bitrate stuff like the cc does.

Plus, nobody is going to ever support devices longer than Nvidia has with the shield.

There is not that much performance boost if all you need is a bit snappier device. I think the $20 ONN UHD is a bit snappier than the CCwGTV. If you need an overall better more powerful device for high bitrate 4k and lossless audio, gigabit ethernet, more and more easily expandable storage, a much better remote, the ability to run the Plex server, Stuff like that, then the Shield Pro should be your next device. But just for a little faster device. I don't know about that.

I had 2017 pro shield before the hdd broke, and i then switched over to Chromecast With Google TV and on my use which is most often streaming stuff from streaming services and YouTube. CCwGTV with it's better support for 4khdr content has been better option for me.

Only thing that is missing from it, has been support for Dolby True HD and DTS HD MASTER-AUDIO which came as a issue for me mainly when I stream stuff from my personal kodi library.

But at least the content that I tested, kodi did a good job downmixing it to 5.1 ac3 or something like that (can't remember now and can't test) So overall in my use Google's offering works better for me, but do keep in mind that there are limits on it's audio output options and that internal storage of it is limited compared to what Nvidia has.

Had a 2017 since then and upgraded my tv over the past year or so to a Dolby Vision OLED. Picked up a Google Tv and it was extremely buggy. Made almost certain there wasn't a 2022 Shield coming, returned the Google Tv and grabbed a 2019 where I belong!

Man, this thread is discouraging.

I've been using 3 CCwGTV's for the last year and while I've liked it overall and it's a good value for it's money, I want to upgrade mainly due to how sluggish the CC can be at times (secondarily is the lack of storage). I've been heavily leaning towards getting a 2019 Shield pro soon, but now it seems most folks here are saying the Shield isn't much of an upgrade, if at all, when it comes to that.

I'm also holding out hopes that some of these new Android boxes will be good, like the Skystream Max or Rocktek RT-G2, but who knows.
