You can add the hard drive via USB. But issue is when switch on the tv it will not detect then you need to restart the tv or re-plug USB drive.
It depends on the manufacturer. Some allow some don't. Just because it may have a USB port doesn't mean it is expandable. I learned that lesson the hard way.
You can fix your memory issue and at the same time fix the non existent Android TV updates on TV included Android TV by grabbing a CCwGTV for $50. The CCwGTV might also offer a better user experience as most TV's are underpowered when it comes to Android TV. Walmart offers a cheaper Android TV stick alternative but I don't have any experience with it.
Have you run into an issue where you need to increase storage? I have an Onn 4k android box and the standard storage was plenty to add my apps...kodi, a couple of apk's, netflix, prime, hulu, etc.
Connect a usb drive and see if your TV allows converting it into internal storage. Settings< Storage .. when you click on your usb in that settings, it should give an option to make it Internal. This is a video I made to show the procedure, you can check. https://youtu.be/vDruMET5zQE
