Best configuration for 2017 nVidia Shield + 18TB Drive (/r/Plex crosspost)

My experience using PMS with an external HDD on the 2017 Shield, which is my main box that I use every day, was not great. PMS would shut down (usually when I was away and trying to stream remotely) and the box would need to be restarted every couple of days, and the only way I could get content on to the drive was by running a FTP client on the shield. I'm currently using an old i3 desktop tower running TrueNAS and it's solved all my problems.
