Tivo Stream 4K or Onn UHD box?

by monevery

Hi, guys! I have an Amazon gift card so I can get the Tivo device for about $19.60. Then I checked the Walmart website and they have their Onn UHD box for $19.88. Since the price difference is so small, which one would you recommend me to get? Thanks in advance

I have both. Got the Stream 4K for free with some promo. I bought the Onn to replace a Roku. As others have said, the Onn is surprisingly bloat free and a more "pure" experience. The Tivo has some Tivo trimmings that, while not terrible, definitely change the experience somewhat. The Onn is slightly newer so I'd probably go with that. But you really can't go wrong either way.

Buy the Onn.

I have both of the devices that you mentioned, as well as a CCwGTV, Roku Ultra, Fire TV stick and an Apple TV 4G (and countless other boxes not worth mentioning). I recently found the TiVo on clearance at Walmart for $15 and wanted to try it based on my positive experience with TiVo back in the day before they were acquired by that stupid company that invented Macrovision (I was a loyal TiVo subscriber from 2000 to about 2015).

Whilst I do love the Apple TV I loathe and hate the remote as it is difficult to pick up, easy to get in the wrong orientation, and doesn’t fit the hand well; it should be featured in the DesignDesign subreddit. The Roku is solid but nothing to get excited about. Fire was, well, OK I guess - nothing positive or negative sticks in my head. CCwGTV was my favorite until I bought the Onn. The TiVo came after the Onn and after two weeks I was happy to switch back to the Onn, mostly due to the TiVo remote’s button layout and the platform being too tied in with Sling (menu items you can’t move, remote buttons placed where they get hit accidentally).

Most Android TV boxes provide a similar experience so it comes down to small differences. Like a lot of other people have commented, I prefer the larger remote on the Onn, (even if I can’t reprogram the buttons - grrr) and the fact that it uses micro USB which allows me to use accessories that I have laying around, like chargers and OTG cables. The only real annoyance with this box, which is relatively minor, is the physical layout of the device itself, with the USB and video cables being on opposite sides of the unit. If I just stick it to the back of the TV or wherever this won’t really be much of a problem - out of sight, out of mind…

My preferring this box surprises me as I generally hate Walmart and their cheapening of so many markets and products and try to avoid them whenever possible (in some ways I can’t as they’re they only place locally where I can get my favorite pasta sauce or variety of Manhattan Clam Chowder). I like this box so much that I bought another one, for $10 on CL this time, to send to my parents to replace the Apple TV 3G/Chromecast combination that they currently use.

Like me, they use a lot of Apple devices (iPads, iPhones) and it seems like Apple TV would be a good fit for them, but sometimes someone comes up with a solution that’s rather surprising, as is the case here. Over the years I’ve found that you cannot let yourself get locked into one brand or platform. I may use lots of Apple products, which comes from trial and error with other brands, but I also use Windows, Mac, Chromebox and Linux and a handful of Android devices. I’m reminded of a misguided friend that would only buy Sony stuff, but then would complain about the quirks and incompatibilities, especially on the computers. He once said he didn’t want one of those cheap Vtech phones, and was surprised when I showed him the inside of his, complete with ‘Vtech’ proudly displayed on the motherboard. I also upgraded the firmware of his fancy Sony DVD-R drive with firmware for a Lite-On drive, a brand he intentionally avoided, not realizing at the time of purchase that this is exactly what he bought, albeit with a fancier label.

Onn will give you more generic Android TV looks and feel. Out of the box the TiVo Stream 4K will have a lot of TiVo bloatware. If you are comfortable with using ADB these can easily be disabled and you have a generic Android TV device. If you aren't comfortable doing this, stick with the Onn.

I bought the TiVo Stream 4K from WalMart on clearance for $15 and removed/disabled the TiVo bloatware and it works great. Much better experience than my FireTV stick.

I bought and tried both and stuck with the 4K Onn box. I was having trouble with my Firestick in my bedroom and this works perfectly. Returned the Tivo device.

Tivo has dolby vision and dolby Atmos. You have to sign up for a free tivo account and there is a bunch of bloat ware, which you can disable but not uninstall

Onn has a better remote and is clean Android. The only branding is the onn logo on start up. They don't even preload Vudu which Walmart owns. The onn is faster than the tivo on benchmark. It comes just below the CCwGTV and above tivo and firestick 4k. It's a little bit snappier in real use. I like the onn remote way better. People actually buy the cheaper hd version of the onn just for the remote to use other devices like CCwGTV

Now for the nitty gritty that you may or may not care about.

The tivo has a bug with subtitle. Subtitle is broken on the HBO max app and semi broken on apps like mx player pro. The tivo doesn't pass through audio. It seems to wraps everything in eac3.

The onn does not automatically switch on HDR when the source is HDR. HDR is either on all the time (it converts sdr to HDR) or off all the time (HDR not recognized:)

I'll vouch for the 4K Onn box. I've also got Google's version (Chromecast with GoogleTV). I like the Onn box better, plus it has a better remote.

Don't let the affiliation with Walmart dissuade you--the Onn 4K box is surprisingly good and free of bloat. Since it has access to Google Play, you can just download Steam Link to stream your gaming library (no need to sideload). I've got 2 FireTV sticks, a Roku, and these GoogleTV devices--I've never seen a better recommendation engine than what is available on GoogleTV (like the Onn box). I also really like the GoogleTV interface quite a bit.

I don't know anything about the Tivo products, but like I said--the Onn 4K box has been awesome.

MrShakezilla

they both are realistically almost the same minus the remote. the onn has a tiny bit more storage, the tivo makes adding extra a bit easier. the remote from the onn i prefer over the tivo and compared side by side the onn is a very small amount snappier when using it. most wal mart stores had the tivo down to 10-15$ on clearance. the onn may get more updates where the tivo might now since tivo has said they are pretty much done with it.

I personally had nothing but problems with the Tivo and ended up returning it. I haven't used the Onn so I don't know how it rates. I currently use the Dynalink on one TV and the newer Google chromcast or whatever it's called. Both have worked much better then the Tivo ever did.

Onn UHD. Almost no bloatware compared to TiVo, and you can tell by how much faster it feels.

Effective_Bit489

TiVo stream are very nice devices

Goodspike

Very happy with the Tivo Stream, never tried the other.

Yep main difference is Tivo has Dolby Vision and full streaming Atmos support. Onn UHD doesn't. If you don't need either of these things I recommend the ONN. but for $20 you can really flip a coin.

Onn 4K at $20 is probably the best value, but if you can get Tivo Stream 4K for $10 at walmart then that's a better deal. Onn has the best remote imo, and newer Android 10 while also being able to support bootloader unlock.

You would have to debloat and customize either one, here are some guides on that. You will need to use ADB for both to debloat

The Onn UHD 4k box is absolutely amazing. The performance is stunning. And for an additional $6 from Amazon you can get a USB to Ethernet adaptor that's plug n play. I've used many streaming boxes and this one is very impressive for the price point.

You can’t eat good steak for a dollar :) juts check the hardware specifications which is better get that. Software is not big deal, technically those are tiny computers but the security are.. do you able to modify how you like. Conclusion if you really wanna spend that $20 just save little bit more and get Amazon tv cube.
