Are you troubled too because of not getting regular software updates on your devices?

Am I "troubled" by it? No. Am I annoyed by it? I was.

My parents have a perfectly fine Samsung TV from 8 years ago with abandoned software. Half of the "smart" apps don't even work anymore (and they sucked even when they worked), Netflix has the old logo and is almost completely unusable.

So I disconnected that TV from the Internet (disabled Wifi), bought them a Chromecast with Google TV last year and their TV has a new life now (also works as a videoconference thing, thanks to Duo and a Logitech cam I plugged in, so they can now call me and other family members from "the TV" while sitting on the couch). Chromecast gets regular and automated updates from Google, so I don't need to care about updating stuff on my own.

The once-smart TV is now a dumb display for the Chromecast and their satellite TV decoder.

So, if TV set manufacturers can't do a proper job with software, I'd like them to just be making dumb TVs with good displays and leave the "smart" part to third-party devices (or I will treat their "smart" TVs as "dumb ones", by ignoring their shitty soon-to-be-abandonware). Just give me an HDMI port and a high-wattage USB-C port.

The main reason why TVs are made "smart" is that it is lucrative to the manufacturer. They are able to monetize your view and usage habits .

What manufacturers don't do is either update their TVs for long, nor do they take data security (and privacy) very seriously. Instead of investing resources into keeping legacy products updated, they instead allow them to atrophy until people just buy new TVs.

TV and streaming device vendors do not deliver nor intent soon to accept the fact that delivery of regular software updates is must in nowadays doing business in this industry. Why?

Yes we need streaming devices not just with android tv, but with tizen and web os too. And set top boxes should be with tv only, it is basically a tuner why do we need external set top box, codecs don't change much for 10 to 12 years.
