Firestick 4k max vs mi box s 4k

Hey all,

As the title suggests my dad is looking for a new device either the new firestick 4k max or the xiaomi mi box s 4k, or if anyone has another suggestion I'm open to it, I've a nvidia shield tv Pro myself but he's not willing to spend the money on that and won't accept anything towards it from me either. I know the firestick max has the better specs etc, but I felt that amazon slowed down the firestick with a new update anytime a brand new firestick was released when I had one, that's why I'm wondering would a different box be any good. Any help or advice or suggestions would be appreciated.

Firestick 4K Max supports AV1 decoding and is more futureproof.

One is 2016 technology, the other is 2021. Would you consider buying a phone from 2016? A TV?

From what I've read Xiaomi has tendency to brick their box with updates and say that Firestick 4K is better.

Grab him a Max and put a 3rd party launcher on it. I just set one up yesterday and it's a really good device with the only thing hindering it being the UI. Getting rid of all the "helpful features" makes it even better. I've done the same with the Chromecast with Google TV. I you are in the US I also highly recommend the $20 Onn UHD if he doesn't need Dolby Vision or full Dolby Atmos support.

The Mi devices are a hot mess. Software, updates and support is terrifyingly horrendous

At the current price of $35 for the FireTV max, it is simply amazing especially with wifi6. So much so that I bought 5 and getting rid of my 2017 shields. Just my 0.02

Depending upon the sophistication of his system, the TiVo Stream 4k is a fantastic little device. It outputs Dolby Vision AND Dolby Atmos, where as, even my Shield will NOT output Dolby Vision.
