What will be happening to Android TV?

by youwi08

I clearly remember google announcing the new Google TV about a year ago, I own an android TV and am wondering whether it will go obsolete and stop receiving updates or whether it will remain as Android TV or whether it will be updated to Google TV

Google TV is not an OS, it's a modified interface. All Android TV & Google TV devices run on Android TV OS.

Android TV won't go obsolete. Almost all existing Android TV devices will get the new UI , which is inspired by Google TV's UI.

Receiving updates depend on device & manufacturers. In general, streaming devices with Android TV OS tends to get updates longer than built-in Android TVs.

There's no such news of Android TV devices getting "Google TV update" yet afaik

That's going to depend on your TV maker. Updates are up to them. As far as we know Google will continue to make Android TV available as Google TV is built on top of Android TV. Now that they get a revenue stream from both UI versions, Discovery and Google TV, hopefully they have incentive to keep both around.

Pretty sure Android TV is the OS for Android devices; like for Mii Box, nVidia SHIELD and such. And Google Play Movies & TV is now called, "Google TV". Confusing, eh? Yeah..

The Google TV operating system on TVs is just a rebranding and redesigning of Android TV, they're fundamentally the same just with different UIs. Your Android TV won't be obsolete as a result don't worry.
