My week old TV flickers when connected to HDMI

by FatWollump

I recently bought a smart TV running on Android and whenever I connect my laptop to my TV, and change the source, it starts flickering madly for a while, changing between my desktop and just pure black.

After a while (anywhere from 3 to 10 minutes) it just works properly, but today it started flickering again after working normally when I changed the volume.

The HDMI cable is brand new, and I tried all 3 HDMI ports on the TV.

Changing any display settings through Windows doesn't change the flickering at all.

Besides that, when watching a YouTube video it will sometimes slow down and speed up again to correct, even at 1080p (my TV is 4K). It is connected via ethernet and should be able to reach speeds of up to 12MB per second (100 Mbps).

Finally I couldn't get Windscribe (a VPN service) to work. When I turned it on my internet wouldn't work at all, and even turning it off wouldn't fix it. I had to unplug the ethernet cable and plug it back in, for it to work again.

I can't seem to find a way to run a software update or anything either idk if that might be causing any issues.

Any help is greatly appreciated

i'd try swapping out that hdmi cable just to eliminate it as a possible cause. i used to sell all kinds of cables, it's rare but i've seen bad batches of brand new cat5, cat6, hdmi, usb, etc. cables. if it's not the cable it could be the hdmi port. hdmi cables are heavy and put a lot of strain on laptop hdmi ports, which is why i rarely use them on mine.

i'm not familiar with windscribe but i'd contact their support people, it's what i do when i have problems with my vpn. i don't use youtube but try playing that video on another pc, maybe it's the video?

Also, in regards to the cable. It should match the HDMI version of the ports on the TV also not all cables are created equal and expensive doesn't mean it is better either. Be sure it is certified for the version you need.

I've the same problem. Cable works fine in other devices, but only when I connect it to my desktop pc start that flickering. In my case is related to the port and the cable not entering how it supposed, because it turns to green and flickers in red sometimes. It gets a bit loose. But when I use a Display port to HDMI adapter, It works without turning it in black every time.

Edit: It is a 20 meters HDMI Cable. This happens in windows 10 and 11, so is not software related
