Android TV box which will play 4k HDR 10 bit bluray remux over network / nas

by stoolzmclingo

Hi, i'm looking for an Android TV box or cheap mini PC which will play 4k HDR 10 bit bluray remux over network / nas

So far i've tried the NVIDIA sheild tube, 4k FIRE TV 2019, latest google TV stick, Samsung Galaxy S21 ultra using dex, all of which play the movie but drop frames or have occasional stuttering or buffering.

My Surface pro 7 and my occulous quest 2 play the same movies over the network with no issues so I now its not my network, i'm guessing the arm devices i'm using just arent powerful enough.

Intel nuc are too expensive, looking for something sub £100 ideally.

Get the Shield 2019 (nontube version) It plays everything.

The stuttering with the tube version is a bit of a mystery. But the general theory is that it's a ram limitation. The tube has 2GB, the normal verison has 3GB and plays 4k DV and so on without issue.

Highest bitrate I've played is one of the 4k LOTR movies, it's around 100mbit for parts of the movie.

Edit: The 2017 model is also great but then you primarily lose Dolby vision

just for local network playback only? one of those cheap amlogic s905x4 Chinese boxes with coreelec is enough. Nvidia shield will work flawlessly but that's way overkill for what you need

clarkss12

What app are you using to watch your media that is locally stored?? Kodi, Plex, Emby, etc??

The devices you listed should do the job. Are you sure it's not a connection issue? What's your tested speed on those devices?

SHIELD PRO 2017 or 2019 and make sure refresh rate switching is enabled for smooth playback

not the tube.

you need the shield PRO. thats the only thing outside of htpc that'll do it. doing this under 100 euro aint really feasible. the others ether lack network speed or ram that the shield PRO has.

HK1 Amlogic, With a custom firmware/image should do I think?

Amlogic S905X2

Mali G31 GPU

But as others said the Shield TV Pro has a TX1 GPU which would be the best for decoding, your other option is to pick up a older pc and slap a semi-decent GPU in it, CeX sell a good chunk of minipcs at varying prices.
