TCL R646 CEC not working

by Maria0zawa

So i bought the 55R646 with google tv OS and plugged in my own Chromecast with google TV into HDMI 1 (ARC) but unable to get the CC remote working via CEC to power on/off the TV. Tried all different possible codes that the setup provides (7 attempts)

Both the TV and CC have latest firmware. I have CEC enabled on the TV and Auto CEC set on the CC remote. Anyone has the same issue? Or do I have a bad unit? TIA!

Yeah, I couldn't get it to work for power. And to make things worse, the IR sensor with the CCwGTV remote and the TV only work from 3ft away. If you try again but point it right at the sensor from a foot away I'm sure it will work.

I ended up getting an IR repeater and that fixed the problem.

The tv might not be compatible

Does the TV have quick start turned on?

I have the same issue with my Apple TV. Anyone got any ideas?

I got a new TCL 5 QLED with Google instead of Roku. Roku has thoroughly annoyed me with their latest update - you cannot adjust any local or dynamic contrast (or any other settings) when game mode is on.

That said, the new android Google TCL 5 series has an absolutely brilliant picture, amazing settings to adjust it exactly how you want, even in game mode. There are several really annoying issues, though.

  1. CEC does not work right. My Xbox SX turns the TV on just fine, but it will not turn it off when powering down. The Roku TCL's will do all of it fine, so it's an Android issue.

  2. Audio lag. If you shut down and turn on the TV with quick start / standby mode, there is a solid half second audio lag on the tv or pass through audio. I turned off standby option, so it does a full boot every time. Audio is responsive now, but wow this thing takes forever to boot up. It's a damn TV, come on...

  3. Takes three times as long to boot up as the Roku. It's really awful. We need simple, vivid, responsive display TV's without all the nonsense.

I noticed an update today for my 65 R646. After I updated I restarted the TV and still the same behavior for me. I can turn on the TV when I turn on my nintendo switch or apple tv 4k, but the TV does not power down when I turn off the apple tv. I have not tried the switch yet but I assume its the same.

In addition to the CEC power off issue, I find the TV (Google OS) to be really buggy. My TV would not take any signal from any HDMI input until I restarted the TV, then displayed the signal like normal.

I am currently going back and forth with TCL support. I can return the unit until Jan to Best Buy - not sure if I will yet or not.

I’m returning this TV ASAP. I was so happy when I won the panel lottery and then tried to watch Dune and immediately video didn’t line up with audio at all. Absolutely terrible tv shouldn’t have fallen for the deals

I just got the TCL S546 and it does the exact same thing. CEC power on works fine, but will not power off with my Roku or my Raspberry Pi HTPC.

I went to their website and used the "Contact Us" feature to ask if this was a bug. I got the it is designed this way and the copy paste try this to see if it works instructions.

I'm really happy to have found this thread. I love the TV outside of this issue, but it is a fairly core issue for me, so I'm thinking hard about taking the TV back.

I agree with others here that it is absolutely absurd to not have the ability to power the TV off with CEC in 2021 with the interconnected nature of our devices and the fact that my TV's going back to 2008 work this way. It's expected funtionality.

CEC power off is working now with my Apple TV on my R646.

There was a recent firmware update (Thanksgiving week). When I first updated the firmware CEC power off was still not working, but for some reason, it now works.

I have found disabling "Quick Start" in the TV setting makes CEC work better. I had it this way before the update and perhaps this plus the firmware update fixed CEC.
Quick Start Power On has issues locking into a HDMI signal in my experience.

Who knows why it started working, but I am happy CEC is working for me now.

Update: CEC power off is not working again. Seems to be very spotty.

Try this:

  1. turn off CEC and then turn off tv
  2. unplug tv
  3. hold down power cycle button (button is on tv, not remote) - 20 seconds with tv unplugged
  4. plug in tv
  5. now try using your chrome cast to turn on the tv.
  6. cec should work now.

To follow up, I went back and forth with TCL via email using their website's "Contact Us" feature. The person was very nice, but was clearly giving me the stock "it was designed this way" answers. My last question was could this be forwarded to the tech team as either a bug or feature request. The support person said that it would be forwarded, but who knows what that will do. I'm probably going to start tweeting at TCL's official account to see what that does lol. For the time being I got a Sofabaton and I'm liking it to control everything even without CEC working as it should.

How do I enable CEC on a 75r646? I can't find the setting in the menus.

I see "arc" but when I select this as the audio output it says arc not connected.

I have a Samsung HDMI soundbar

I have an issue where it seems the tcl is trying to boss my other inputs. On my previous Sharp tv all worked as expected except the tv wouldn't auto power off.

I have the tv connected to a Denon avr-s740h, that currently has a 2019 nvidia shield and a ps4.

When I power on using the shield it turns on the AVR, and the TV then I get a arc device message and the Ps4 turns on and the tv turns off. Then it cycles through going back to the shield... I'm so freaking frustrated at this point, I'm thinking of returning it and getting a Hisense.

I fixed this issue with mine go Into inputs and one of them is off thats supposed to be on and it fixed my problems

I had the exact same issue with my C825, wouldn't work properly, It's actually a software bug that TLC Support admits to here, the picture was from another Reddit post from another user.
I updated my TV to the latest OS Version, TCL is garbage at OTA updates, so you will most likely need to update it manually via USB.
Try to find newer firmware on this telegram channel https://t.me/tclupdates Or ask here https://t.me/tclupdates_discussion
I can finally say after updating to 'V8-T615T01-LF1V091.000254' it fixed the issue for me, it might for you too :)
