I am thinking about following this guide on a projector. His setup is basically a supercharged shoebox projector, but he used stock android on the phone. Is it possible to install android TV on a smartphone? In that case, where do I get an image?

Regardless of the legalities of obtaining the required apps, frameworks, etc for android tv on a mobile, the UI doesn't work with touch.
I did some experiments with an old windows table (intel atom) and was able to get android x86 with the android tv launcher and libs (I didn't build the iso). There was no way to exit out of menus or go back to the home screen via touch. It had to be done either with a keyboard or mouse (with right click configured to go back).
It isn't worth the trouble.
Seriously though. Why not just buy an onn box you can often get them for 20$. .. and you will save yourself hours and hours of messing around trying to get to work around going..
Its not, Android tv is not open source, and no one even tries developing android tv for smartphones
