Hands-free Google Assistant using external mic on Android TV?

by Prox_Arrow47

Is it possible to enable hands-free (with wake word) Google assistant on my Sony A8H running Android TV using an external microphone ? Many new TV are coming with a Built-in mic and this feature enabled but my TV does not have a Built-in mic . (there is mic on the remote but needs to press the assistant button)

You can use a Google home mini, it is a small speaker with Google Assistant built-in. You can use it to control your tv.

You need to assign it to the same room where your tv is and say for example:

  • Turn on tv.
  • Play The walking dead on tv (you need to link your streaming services on your phone's Google assistant app).

Be aware that using Google assistant from any device apart from the one integrated on the tv, may have a different behavior.

For example: you can order the TV's assistant to play a certain live channel or play a TV show on some app like Disney+. But, using the assistant on your phone will only let you play content available on YouTube or some of the services linked on the Google Assistant app (not all services are available). Forget about trying to play a live channel, it will probably open YouTube.
