Full-screen advertisements on Philips TV?

by FezVrasta

My brother owns a Philips OLED TV and starting from this morning he already got 3 of the below advertisements while watching Netflix.

Is anyone aware of changes in Android TV or on the specific Philips firmware that may have introduced them? They are pretty obtrusive for a 1.500 euro TV 🤔

That must be a technical error (or a very stupid decision by someone at Phillips or TV-distributor if its a managed solution in someway like a settop-box) as no content-provider (Netflix/Disney etc.) would allow this without approval first.
They are protective about their IP's and that means who gets to advertise next to it.And I dont believe AndroidTV does this out of the box. Google/AndroidTV will introduce more full screen video-ads directly in their interface, but that is very different than destroying the premium video-experience like this.

They are essentially taking over what should be a walled garden experience for that app-provider where the user is currently watching content. Thats a big no-no, and I can only imagine if this is indeed Netflix content being devalued by forced ads they will have a melt-down on who is responsible.

Call their support line. Netflix will tear them a new one if this is intentional.

Check the installed apps last one

My parents have a Philips ATV and they have zero ads on it.

Never connect your smart TV to the internet.

The ad is extremely ironic. It says "the truest freedom is the freedom of choice" - for a forced ad where the user doesn't have the choice

Welcome to the future.

Just disable the Netflix app or use an ad blocker for your LAN and direct the TV to it
