Also casting from Android tablet, phone, etc is super slow and sucks.

If it has a USB port you can try and see if a drive can be formatted as device storage. That's not going to help with Speed though. If you don't need Dolby Vision add the little ONN UHD device from Wal-Mart $30. Very good streamer.
More storage probably through usb, more speed you can forget. Smart TV'S use low-end chips en not much ram.
The shield is (sadly) still the best option
