Hi
My TCL television has HDR but it's terrible since it only has 300 nits luminosity. HDR videos end up veeery dim, and there's no option in the television to disable HDR or switch to SDR.
Is there an app in the android store that can disable HDR or force playback to SDR ?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Just note that if a file has HDR, then some form of HDR-to-SDR tonemapping must occur, and there's no guarantee it'll look better than your TV's HDR tonemapping, especially since it will be compressing it down into a smaller range. I'm not sure whether the player itself would be doing the tonemapping, or if Android handles that somehow.
By the way, have you tried watching the HDR stuff with the lights out? I find that a lot of TVs have the default SDR settings cranked way brighter than it's supposed to be, and so the switch the HDR sometimes feels too dim in comparison, but usually watching with the lights out will allow your eyes to adjust to the image better. Although sometimes this dimness is due to overaggressive tonemapping, turning out the lights still usually solves that problem too. You'd probably never know that movie theaters are typically 50 nits for example.
