Must-have apps on an Android TV?

by charlieglide

Hi folks,

I have an Android TV and since I came across on SmartTubeNext, a really good Youtube-replacement, I was wondering if there are any other useful apps that might not be available via Google Store officially, such as SmartTubeNext?

I also use Kodi, which is great for watching videos stored on NAS and AceStream for various video streams.

Honestly, SmartTubeNext and Kodi, that's all I use aside from standard streaming apps. Also ButtonRemapper depending on the device/remote you use (if needed). You're good!

  • Aptoide app store
  • Edge browser (via Aptoide) -- runs better than any Chrome version you may find, and also based on Chromium
  • Remote ADB Shell (via Aptoide) -- for some ADB magic

Other recommended apps (via Play store):

  • Aerial screen saver
  • Button Mapper (to remap your remote buttons)
  • Live Channels (to consolidate all your TV streaming apps into one)
  • Sideload Channel Launcher 3 (my favorite launcher)

I run out of room with all the streaming services I have.

Plex would be the one I use the most.

I installed Netflix and Amazon, but now I'm out of space. Thanks Google.

I can get anything I want with kodi and tivimate.

Justwatch: Select the streaming services you use and now you have all their catalogs in one app. Select a movie or episode, press a button and the correct app opens.

Mixplorer: the best free file manager you will find for Android.

Kodi: one of the oldest and coolest media center. It has add-ons for major streaming platforms: Netflix, Disney+, paramount+, HBO max, Amazon prime. You can have one catalog with your downloaded content (tv shows, movies, music, photos) plus the content you want for the platforms I named previously in one app.

You can also sync your library and watch progress with any other Kodi instance (it's available in any system you can imagine) or online services like trakt.

Cetusplay is the first app I have to download to my android TV. It does too many things to mention. You can find it in the app store. You'll need to install the tv version app on the android TV obviously, and the phone version on your phone or tablet. Look it up and see everything it can do. Enjoy 😉

Also wanted to check what apps which are not currently available for Android TV would you like to be onboarded? Personally I would love to have Amazon (not PrimeVideo) app to be available to browse and shop stuff on big screen. I am not keeping my hopes high though. However not sure why Amazon won't put it up on Firestick at least.
