Walmart Onn - Plex QSV encoded choppy video?

by NightHawkCA

I recently tried my hand at encoding video for Plex via my laptop’s QSV encoder. When I play on my Onn UHD set top box (not the streaming stick) it stutters video but audio is fine. Doesn’t matter bitrate or audio format. If I play the original HEVC encoded video, it plays fine so I am using that. But I wondered if anyone else can confirm that QSV video stutters on their Onn Plex client, and if NOT, what are your settings on both the Plex client and the Onn unit? Thanks everyone

Interestingly - same LG TV, using “internal” Plex client (LG App Store) plays the same video with same settings perfectly fine. So it’s either a setting issue on the Onn / Onn Plex client, or a hardware oddity on the Onn unit? What troubleshooting or settings changes should I try?

There have been some known issues with Plex and HEVC .mp4 files for some time now — I would try .mkv -> .mp4 and vice versa if you haven’t already. I had inexplicable stutters with .mp4 HEVC video that were completely fixed by using mkvtoolnixGUI and muxing to .mkv. Hope this helps at least narrow it down.

Edit: I read your post a couple more times and am now aware that this advice sucks. Thank you for coming to my Ted talk.

LG is WebOS and ONN is Androlid TV could be a difference in capabilities of the native video players Plex uses. What is QSV usually used for, never heard of it.

By QSV, I assume you mean Intel Quick Sync Video. What did you encode the file as? When Plex plays it, is it transcoding? Is there a reason you wouldn't just use the original HEVC file?
