Is it better to have a separate Google account just for an Android TV used in a household?

by blazincannons

I was wondering whether it would be a bad idea to use my personal Google account for the Android TV that everyone uses in my house. I am not particularly keen on having my personal account on a non-personal device like a TV. For example, I do not want my recommendations and other stuff getting messed because everyone else is using my account. Also, I don't know if apps like YouTube auto logins to the same Google account used for setting up the TV. If it does, that would be a huge issue for me.

Do you think it is better to have a dedicated Google account just for this purpose? It would be more or less used as a family account only. One main advantage that I can think is that when I am not there and if the TV needs to be reset or something in the rare scenario. I wouldn't have to share my personal account's password to re-setup the TV.

I made a new google account just for my Shield TV. I didn't want anyone being able to access my gmail, passwords, or any info from my account that I use on my phone, etc. I added my Shield account as a family member to still have access to apps and games I've purchased.

I have my own account, let's call it hughk for mail but we have a hughk.family (example) which is used for joint things like for the TVs and the smartphone. Keeps everything separate and stops the YouTube recommendations getting confused

I have a separate tvbox google account that I use on my Android box, Sony android tv and also logged in in my phone as a second google account.

When I try to set up a new Google/android tv device I can easily approve from my phone. And I enjoy having same apps on all my TV devices. Since most phone apps and tv apps are different I don't like to use my main account on a TV even if it is only me who will use that device.

I'd definitely do that and add that new account to a family share so it can share Google subscriptions, app purchases, Stadia games, etc.

I do. Mostly because I cannot use the family plans with my Google for Business account.

It works well. I also have that account on my phone for YouTube and YouTube TV.

I use a separate family account for Android TV for last two years, it works fine for our family of 4. This account is part of family account of Google, Spotify, etc. Any feature not supported by TV app UI, can be done through web interface.

I have two Google accounts, One is personal and the other for TV

Sideloading Chrome and visiting gmail in it actually auto logins, and provides access to everything in there. I am a bit concerned about this when using CCwGTV as a travel device.

I don't, but I also only have me & my lady to worry about & she has her own profiles & accounts & all my apps are on 1 account too.

If it's a personal device use your personal account. If it isn't don't.

I mean it's really up to you.. you can still link other devices in Google home

I just learned about and joined Google Family whatever. It lets you share apps purchased with accounts that agree to share theirs, too, in a nutshell. Buying apps would have been my only suggested caveat here. Instead, -- Hey, did you know you can now link accounts to share bought apps? heh. Good luck.

I am an only user so I have my account synced. Plex, too. I cannot think of a reason any account would not be as customizable. Especially with the Google Family Plan, whatever the trademark name is.

I don't bother. I thought about it at the start but set up as myself initially and jut left it. As you use it more you notice that the recommendations don't really matter and most apps have a profile selection option when you open it anyways. You can choose not to have personal results in Google assistant and YouTube just adds the odd recommendation on other people's views but as I use it mostly and on my phone, the bulk recommendations are related to my anyways. I'd like a proper profile selection on Google tv other than the kids profile but it's not as impactful as I expected just using my nornal profile for everything

No I use my main account as I buy the stuffs from there and want to be able to load it on any device...

I do have a different/multiple different youtube google accounts which we switch to watch.

Main-Mammoth

I sign in on mine with my account and have signed into Netflix etc but have signed out of YouTube. Every one uses a no profile YouTube and then their own Netflix user which is all logged in by my user.

The recommendations from Google TV have been pretty good for me and I suspect that is because Google is using my search queries and such to generate.

You would lose if you do not use your primary Google account.

But the other is that we have a family YouTube Premium. It comes with 6 accounts but all of ours a taken by my wife and kids. So no room to use two different accounts.

I've not tried it, but I believe you CAN have multiple account profiles.

Maybe make a new account that is the "Guest/Shared" profile, but also add your own on there for when you want your content?

YouTube, etc DO auto-login (which is exactly what you want when you are using the TV -- and exactly what you DON'T want when the TV is shared!)

samati

That's a good idea, but personalized home screens are coming soon. And if you have small kids and set parental controls on the only account, then when the adults want to watch something then you have to undo all that each time. It sounds like a lot of work.

trlef19

YouTube does auto login but you can logout and you can also sideload another YouTube app but besides yt I don't think there is anything from your account. Maybe your card could be used on Play store

MustardOrMayo404

It's possible to have multiple accounts on Anroid TV. Go to 'Settings', then 'Accounts & Sign-In', and select 'Add account'

I also feel like sharing my own experience. As my user flair suggests, I have a Prism+ Q55 in my living room, and in my case, I use the Android side of the TV more than the only other family member (older than me) who lives with me, who in turn only really uses a pay TV box and Netflix, sometimes using Spotify and YouTube. For YouTube, due to reasons I can't easily explain, I ask him to sign out so that his viewing habits don't influence my recommendations.

Never thought about this question before. I used a separate account for my Skyworth tv , working nice and no mess until now.
