Shield has AndroidTV 9 Pie.

Generic Chinese TV boxes may have Android 9 Pie.

Both are Android, both are version 9, both are the running the codename "Pie" Android OS.

The difference is the ShieldTV and other official certified devices use the TV user interface and framework, versus using the mobile/tablet interface of Android.

The mobile/tablet interface is open sourced in Google AOSP so the Chinese box makers can use Android just not AndroidTV.

In making a buying decision first decide what functions & features you expect from a system. Then decide for the hardware. Don't waste your money on crap.

Current best Chinese box is Ugoos AM6 line of boxes, has good build quality, and the most important thing is that is has gotten somewhere close to 40 software patches since it's release. But most likely once Amlogic releases a new chip then Ugoos development will shift to the new chip and the box will cease to get any updates.

As a user both legit AndroidTV and China Android boxes I can claim... go for legit Google supported ones.

Sure the higher RAM, larger storage sounds fascinating plus at a much lower price but believe me, a supposedly 4GB RAM works crappier than 1GB RAM legit device. And if you aren't using much apps, 8GB storage and more should be enough.

Further downside is that even ATV designed app you DL might not be responsive to your remote input, but on the plus side can use Google Chrome or similar browser at ease.
