Amazon Prime HDR10 Issues

by evolvd

Hey all,

I'm not sure yet if this is an issue with my tv (Hisense H9G) or the Android TV Amazon app but I'm leaning towards the latter. However, I get these crazy blotchy patches of backlighting only when watching hdr10 content on Amazon.

I can confirm a few things :

DV titles on Amazon look fine. (They are rare but Jack Ryan is one) Vudu HDR and DV look fine. Amazon HDR10 through the PS5 looks fine.

All of the above leads me to believe there is something up with the way they render HDR10 content with their app. Wondering if anyone else has come across this and/or found a solution.

Color depth being the only obvious difference, I verified Vudu hdr10 and DV which look fine are 10bit.

Amazon in general is really bad at mastering HDR content. Their content very often has washed out black levels, which of course destroys the capabilities of either OLED or local dimming sets.

I often recommend manually dropping the black level on your set while watching Amazon content. It's unfortunate that this is necessary.

Interestingly enough, the game AC Valhalla has a very similar issue. Certain apps probably simply misinterpret the PQ curve signal format.

Wait what? How do you get all that signal info on android tv apps? I only get the clock. I get more info on hdmi signals, but never on apps?
