I Hate the Tivo Stream 4k What Should I get Instead?

by BiffBiffkenson

People say they love the remote but it's so busy with buttons, they are desperate to get you to the tivo pages which suck.

I'd get the Onn because apparently its stock android tv and a side launcher can be installed in a straight forward manner from what I have read but this common complaint that it crashes kind of puts me off. The Onn will work with a hub to give it ethernet and an input for a drive right? How often does this crash in general and do you think the brain trust at Walmart will ever fix it?

Not sure how easy the CCwGTV will take to a new launcher. Feedback on that would be great.

Recommendations?

Thanks in advance

Went with the CCGTV, thank you very much for the advice and feedback, you guys are great!

I don't like the TiVo either, but it's better if you disable the junk and reprogram the remote with Button Mapper.

I mostly use the Firestick 4K, but it's far from perfect too.

I have all three. The Onn crashes. It's not worth having to unplug it everyday or two. I wanted to love the device.

Chromecast is fine. Remote isn't great, Onn's is better.

I disabled the Tivo apps for the Stream 4k. Seems to be pretty good now that I don't have to worry about hitting the Tivo buttons.

I'm now looking at the Mecool KM2. Same remote as the Onn 4k but I think it is more stable. And Ethernet jack without an adapter.

Disabling the AndroidTV "Home Screen" app is easy with ADB to then use a custom launcher, the "package name" is the same in most all AndroidTV devices (ShieldTV, TiVo, Mecool, etc.), but for GoogleTV they changed the package name, that is all. So, you just uses a similar ADB command with an edit for the new package name for the GTV home screen.

Back to the OP question, absolutely No androidTV streaming device has a fully debugged Operating System. They all have problems! Should wait for a device to be close to a year old to see if all those early adopters of the new device, which end up being the devices beta testers; if they actually got firmware updates to fix all the bugs these AndroidTV devices get launched with.

ShieldTV, MiBox S, TiVo Stream 4K, and CCwGTV all seem to be getting their bugs slowly ironed out. The companies that make those devices have in-house software development teams which is a big bonus.

The Mecool and Onn devices are still to be decided, if "maybe" they will get any decent regular software support that squashes bugs. Mecool used a third-party OEM/ODM for the new KM2, called Skyworth to get Netflix certified, if they also paid extra for software development that device could end up being the best, but is too early to tell.

What is odd about the Onn is i have two of them, crashing / freezing like most peoples at least once a day but over the past week I've yet to seen it crash. I know there has been no firmware update so I'm unsure what could be "helping it".

I would recommend getting the Nvidia shield TV. Excellent 4K quality. All the apps you want. remote control is great.
We have the pro in the living room and the cheaper version in the bedroom. Both work great.
