Since when are 4k movie rentals $8? I wanted to rent a 10 year old movie today and saw it costs $7.99 for a one time rental. That is crazy

Honestly haven't pirated a movie since college but looks like I'm about to start again. Does popcorn time still work?

Where are you trying to purchase the rental? Rentals are getting pricey these days for sure, but should be that steep. Try going to justwatch.com and enter the movie. You should get a list of places to purchase or stream and the prices. It also will show if it is streaming as part of a subscription to something like Amazon Prime or Netflix. And, they are also sometimes on the free ad based services like Crackle.

Also, consider the lower def for the older movies which is usually $1 cheaper. I think the higher def on some of the older movies is just scaled up and not like watching a newer HD movie.

And will only become more expensive. Content is now being hoarded by media moguls

They don't want you to rent a movie once in a while. They want you to see it is so expensive that you decide it is a good deal to pay for a streaming service since you can watch unlimited movies in a month for the same price as 1 movie. Then they will get your money every month which is probably more than the amount you would normally rent.

It probably sells for $9.99

Don't worry you can buy it for $30. Of course in a few years you'll need to pay a streaming surcharge anytime you want to watch it.

Let me tell you about this wonderful place called Blockbuster...-flashback-

Sometimes you had to go outside JUST to rent a movie...no not Redbox!! There was a retail store that made you travel to them...pick out a movie and then stand in line with other people spoiling the ending of movies you haven't seen yet. SOMETIMES you'd go and the movie you wanted to watch is completely rented out.

You came all this way...gotta get something.

I'd usually end up in the Nicolas Cage section after that.

What's even WORSE is getting to the front of the line and your clerk saying you owe LATE FEES...for all 8 GAMES you had rented out. And you swear you brought them back on time. Now you have to argue with a clerk...only for them to find out...your games were deep in the drop box and someone forgot to scan them in. So they take off the fees and give you free popcorn.

Now you get to drive home with your significant other cussing about how dumb Blockbuster is. The next evening you're there again smiling at the same clerk that you were cussing out in the car.

....so nah $8 I guess isn't horrible. The movie will always be there for you on demand. No waiting in line. No buying overpriced snacks. No latefees. No shitty clerks. No gas money spent.

Renting a new release VHS was like $5.99, and that was 20 years ago. $7.99 isn't expensive.

If you want to spend more and buy it, that's an option. Just like it was 20 years ago.

If you want to illegally download or stream, you do you.

Edit: downvoting me won't change it. I'm not the one setting prices.
