Any reason to wait for the new Google TV TCL models vs buying now?

by sampleite

Hi y’all, is there any reason to wait for the upcoming TCL models with Google TV—rather than just buy the TCL tv I want, and adding a CCwGTV now?

Maybe the TVs with GT built into the tv tend to work better… or maybe they’re actually worse, I can’t tell from forums. Do I get any additional features/benefits when the OS is built into the TV?

I suppose it would save me money/clutter if I had the new set all together vs buying the CCwGTV and Ethernet adapter. But I don’t really know when the new TVs will drop (supposed to be soon, but not sure which models).

I’m a new tv buyer and I want everything to work really well… thanks in advance for helping me not screw it up :)

Don't buy a tv for the built in smarts buy it for the input/output and picture features you want. Being open to any tv can make it and whatever streaming devices you want more affordable than sticking to one brand/OS.

I go in expecting the smart experience on the TV to not be good, fully planning to put a Shield or something on it. If it turns out not to be terrible that will be gravy. If TCL is doing something special PQ or price wise on the new sets that would be my only reason to wait.

I have a TCL Google TV (I'm in Australia). Picture quality is great, but the OS can run pretty slow. I am seriously thinking about getting a Chromecast with Google tv just because it should run much smoother

I don't think it will make much of a difference. I got two of the Roku ones and YouTube freezes on 4k pretty often, I had to plug a Chromecast in for when it doesn't work. The other I use a shield exclusively on it.

Still depends on alot of things like how bad you need a tv and budget. Honestly if just major streaming apps can probably get away with the roku one, if you need/want it right now and get Chromecast later. Still give the built in OS a chance, though they tend to be underpowered. It should have Ethernet port still if that's your concern.

The answer is cost. I have bought a 32" HD LED with Android 9 and all ports and screen in around $75, why would I'll spend $49 in a streaming stick? Go for streaming stick if you want to upgrade your existing TV which isn't smart. I had LCD which wasn't a smart TV and $15 1st generation Chromecast made it perfect. Still working solid.

I concur with most of the other comments. In general, smart TVs are underpowered, have less memory and don't get updated like an external streaming device. Recall the audio wars of all-in-one furniture consoles vs separate components. I know that dates me to the 60's and I resemble that! Think of the TV as the video component comparable to the audio speakers. We were told to pay for the best speakers/TV we could afford because that's what determines the fidelity of the sound/picture we will see/hear. BTW, most of us add external audio soundboard to our TVs. Cheers! 👍
