Should I not update my TV?

by 6BaNaNa9

My Sony Bravia Android TV's motherboard got fried by a lightning strike. I gave it to a service shop who replaced it. It now runs Android 8.0. I want to update it but the technician said I shouldn't, as it may damage the motherboard again? Can this really happen? Is it fine if I update it?

So you had previously updated it and then you ended up being downgraded when they replaced the board?

If that's the case, and if it is suggesting an upgrade, then yes you can upgrade it. However, you may find it significantly faster with the older software.

Maybe they put an older board in it?

Unless there is something you need, I wouldn't update.

newer updated operating systems aren't optimized for old hardware. it's fairly common to see performance diminish with updates because the newer software demands more ram. but that's usually just with major updates from say 8.0 to 9.0. incremental updates from 8.0 to 8.1 are usually better optimized. but there's not necessarily any reason TO update unless there's a specific app or feature that you want that won't run without it.
