Walmart ONN AndroidTV .. why all the hate

by niveknow

Android TV is not foreign to my household with Shield TV, MiBox and builtins throughout the house. I moved my last 4k FTV over to this ONN and I can't see why all the hate around here for it. It just works. I added a dongle to add additional USB ports and runs off ethernet. Does 4k just fine w/ HDR. No picture quality issue, no color space issues. I'm streaming 4k rips (some 80G MUX ones) off my home NAS with my installed KODI without any issues. No passthrough issues with audio does DTS-HD just fine. Sure its not a pretty box, but I wouldn't say it's ugly and it's hidden for me. Not the type that likes to display all my devices across in front of the TV. lol

My only gripe would be the 4G storage as I'm already topped out. It recognizes my USB stick just fine, but doesn't allow me to migrate apps to it, or utilize it for additional storage in any way. I saw some post on solving USB stick issues with ADB commands, but those are dated post so not sure if they're even worth trying on Android 10. Has anyone figured out how to use additional storage on it?

Nobody is 'hating' on it. A large portion of people are having freezing issues and tons of other bugs. It worked great for me for a day but crashed and started freezing and stuttering after that. Glad it's working for you, but keep an eye on it while you can still return it. The issues clearly are the cause of the software and not defective units. I wanted it to work but it was freezing while playing 1080p youtube videos.

I got one for a lesser used TV at home, and it works quite well. I grabbed another one to set up for my Mom over her gen 2 chromecast and I'd recommend the device

Hey guys! I made a YouTube video on how to take Onn Tv Box from set-up, to unlocked bootloader/root, to debloating (thanks to this thread and similar!), adding a custom launcher, to using Tasker to "re-route" the buttons on the remote and more. Hope it helps anyone having trouble or new to the device! Thanks!

Where are people "hating" on it? From my experience and what I've seen, everyone appreciates it for being a fairly performant cheap media box (You get the same specs as the CCWGTV minus USB C for $20 less)

Been loving mine.

I see a bit of hate for anything that isn't a Shield around a bunch of AndroidTV outlets. I love my CCwGTV and it cost under $50 and does everything I want from it.

I thought about picking up an ONN box or stick from a TV in my son's room, he doesn't live here any longer so the room isn't active, but Youtube TV tossed a free TiVo Stream at me so I'll probably use that .

In order to use the external storage as an internal one you need to move some system data to it first.

Go to setings -> devices preferences -> storage -> open the external storage and select "move data" or something similar, restart the device and try again.

Ok. I figured it out. Had to issue some ADB commands to mount and format the USB drive before I could migrate. I used the following link below for the series of commands once I connected to it remotely via my network. Took about 5 mins and then I was able to migrate data after a reboot of the ONN.

At this point, I don't have any gripes on the device. =) Does *almost* everything my Shield does from a basic streaming device perspective with NAS movies to Netflix, ... Don't expect the performance compared to a higher dollar Shield, but it works great now that I'm pass the disk space issue.

Which dongle did you end up with?

this type of cable has worked for years with FireTV sticks
so unless ONN cheaped out and left their microusb as
power only, for $4 it's worth the trouble to find out.

I think it might be something with Android 10. Tried a with my CCwGTV and ran into the same issue.

For the ones using Ethernet... Are you able to get more than 100mbps? Or is it USB 2.0 speeds?

My problem with it is when you install some sideloaded apps to it, it doesn't show up on the front at all, and there's no way to make it. You'll have to go all the way in settings just to open certain sideloaded apps. It's annoying.

I decided to try the ONN 4k box to see how it performed compared to my 4k Firesticks. The first device gave me all the freezing issues people have reported here. It seemed if I installed an app, then went into the app the first time it would always freeze up. Then it started happening intermittently. All together about 10 freeze ups. I decided to take it back and exchange it. The 2nd device only froze 1 time and has been working pretty good. I have our apps we pay for (Netflix), IMPlayer and Cinema HD on the stick. We have watched it for 2 days with good results. We did have problems with Cinema last night but I don't know if that was due to the ONN device or not. The device is snappier and more responsive than my 4K Firesticks.

The biggest problem I have with this device is the remote. I use the HDMI outputs on my Sony receiver to send to my Vizio 4K tv. The remote tried 9 codes and could not power on my receiver. The only button that will work is the volume up and down. This is not an ancient receiver. I purchased it about 5 years ago. I also could not find any support address for this device.

Anyone know if the launcher from the onn can be used on other android devices like the xiaomi mi S for example? Failing that...what's the best android tv launcher free or pay?
