Question about Chromecast with Google TV and IPTV streaming

by boahandcock

Hey guys,

I recently got a SONY X900H smart TV which has Android TV built-in and it has been really amazing with the Google assistant integration (like being able to say "Hey Google, Turn on the TV and go to Channel #X")

I have a "non-smart" TV in my dining room and I was looking to buy a Chromecast with Google TV to pair it and I was wondering if:

  1. Be able to use Chromecast with Google TV to stream live IPTV. I found conflicting things on the internet ( This video stated you had to sideload an app to do it

  2. Use voice commands to go to specific channels (Like "Hey Google, Go to Channel #X")

Thanks to anyone who responds.

Yes you can, however there are a few caveats

Live channels app, you can use voice commands to change channels etc, but it's just a front end. You would need to use like live PVR app as the backend

Alternatively, tivimate (r/tivimate) is by far and the best iptv player in the market, looks similar to live channels but has far more functionality etc , but voice commands don't work , that I'm aware of anyway

My 2 cents...anytime I ever used live channels and tried voice commands etc they would work 50% of the time. A remote was just far easier all round

  1. Don't worry, the "Live Channels" app that used to come as a system app on Android 9 and earlier versions doesn't come anymore on Android 10, the problem is, the app doesn't appear in the Play Store if you look it up by using the on-screen keyboard or voice search, it currently appears when you use the Google Assistant, but I believe this is a bug Google must address. The Play Store is full of IPTV apps so you don't have to stick only with that one.
  2. If you use the "Live Channels" app, you can invoke a channel directly from the home screen by using the Google Assistant, just press the assistant button (or trigger the assistant by using your voice on some boxes and televisions) and say "play channel X", you can even ask the assistant from your phone or Google Home device (provided that you added the device to the Google Home app) to turn ON the TV and then switch to the specific channel: "Hey Google, turn ON the TV and play channel X".
