Buying a New TV

by cryptos24

Planning to buy a new TV. I have a normal 4k TV now which I use with Amazon Firestick TV. I was thinking of either a smart TV or an Android TV. Any Ideas on what would be the best choice?

Would not worry too much about the TV's "Smart Ability" but find the cheapest panel, with the best picture quality. And use a Google Chromecast with Google TV, or a Shield TV to take care off and handle the smarts.

Head over to /r/4ktv and use rtings.com to find the best TV that you can afford, and then buy a Shield or new Chromecast.

You can't really get dumb tvs anymore so don't worry about the smarts in the tv just get the best picture and features you can. The tv will outlast the smarts in it anyway be it lack of updates, outdated hardware or other reasons. If you don't worry about the OS it runs and just get the best deal, you can save enough to buy whatever streaming boxes you want to hook up to the tv.

More votes for Sony Bravia. After much comparing I setttled on a Sony X900H and I couldn’t be happier.

Wait for a sale though, prime day is in a few weeks, or wait till November for Black Friday. TVs generally go on sale for about 30% off

Loving my Sony XBR55A8H. The A80J is the newer model and it looks great with Google TV. I like Google TV, so I would recommend it.

I have a Sony Bravia 75X900E Android TV and it has been really great. My brother just bought the Sony XBR65A8H and loves it.

Use sites like rtngs.com and YouTube reviews to find TVs that match your needs. Take your time (although these days just trying to find TVs can be challenging) so you make the best selection that you can live with for a few years.

Good luck and happy hunting!!!

I would not care about the build in smart tv offering. The latest Google Chromecast is a very capable device and I don't think many tv's would challenge it. The standalone device will ge many more updates and if it's 3 years old, replacing it for a new better faster device is relatively cheap compared to a tv that you might be using for 10 years.

I love my new Sony Bravia and like you I used fire tv before but Joe android on the Bravia works fine and don’t need a fire stick.

I would say don't worry too much about the built-in OS and apps, it'll get spanked by a Shield no matter what it has and will be outdated and underpowered in a couple of years. If you find a TV with a good screen you can upgrade its smart capabilities as necessary by upgrading the smart stick/box.

I have a 2016 Philips with Android TV, it can't run Smart Youtube TV smoothly and barely copes with Plex, but its picture is pretty good IMO.

The built in experience is never as good as an external device. If you don't like fire OS then just buy a different device. TVs will always use the bare minimum hardware for smart capabilities and it never ages well over time..

Android tv, roku, or fire tv for the experience. Webos and tizen are 💩

For the hardware just ignore the OS and focus on the picture quality.

If you are going with an andriod stay away from the Amazon tvs. They have issues. Just.read subbefit r/firetv. You'll see how bad it I s.

If you want to plan for the future then get a QLED or an OLED tv they both are great but each has it's pros and cons depending on what you use it for and your taste. I like the QLED myself. As far as brand goes I'll just tell you not to get a TCL the colors are poor in the 4k tv's they sell.

Whatever you get, dont connect it to the internet.
