Help understanding system updates and firmware?

it's an OTT TV Box. Model M8S. Android 4.4.2

when i click system update it says network connection failed but wifi is working lol

i found a site called entertainmentbox that instructs how to update to firmware from 2017 using an SD card and other things i'm confused about. but can i update from a usb?

how important is it to update? and should i be trying to update its android version?

all i really use it for is MX Player, which i'm running an old version of as well and not sure if i should wanna update that too?

I have an Nvidia shield TV and I love it. There is also two old Android boxes in the house running very old firmware and Android versions. If it's working for what you need it to do. You don't need to upgrade anything. If you need more functionality then yes I would recommend upgrading. I hope that helps you..
