5.1 surround issues on HBOMax, Hulu, and Disney+ with digital audio cable

by Mburg930

I have a Sony tv, and hooked up an old Bose lifestyle system with no hdmi. If I’m watching sports, Netflix, or Amazon, the stereo switches to 5.1. If i try to watch something something on Hulu, HBO or Disney+ that says it supports it, it stays at 2.0. Anyone have any issues with this?

That is not an issue but it's the way they behave if they don't support the Dolby Digital Plus to Dolby Digital conversion, that's why Netflix and Prime Video work because they do support the conversion.

Optical audio port doesn't support Dolby Digital Plus, that's why it must be transcoded to Dolby Digital to be output correctly.

What you can do is to contact each developer's app to suggest to add the feature to the app.

The best solution is to get a avr with hdmi input.

Try the following settings.

Settings > Display & Sound > Audio output > Digital audio out (Auto 1)
Settings > Display & Sound > Audio output > Dolby Digital Plus output (Dolby Digital)
Settings > Display & Sound > Audio output > Pass through mode (Off)

What happens when you turn off surround sound on the TV?

It's a known bug with Disney that they refuse to fix for some reason. It won't send 5.1 down optical on Disney plus app.
