Hands on overview of Walmart’s $30 Onn 4K Android TV streaming box

Thanks for posting my article.

I just figured out a bit more about why the colors on this device are so bad and it's much worse than just being in HDR all the time. Turns out that it is defaulting to the wrong color space setting and not applying the correct setting unless the device is rebooted. However, turning off the TV or even just changing inputs causes the incorrect color space settings to be re-applied, which messes the colors up again. So there is no way to use the correct color space settings unless you set them, reboot, and then not turn off the TV or change inputs. Pretty bad.

Seems like decent hardware but poor software. Wait and see if software updates can fix the bugs. HDR always on is not going to work for a lot of people, including me. Hoping Walmart can fix it like Mi did for the MiBox S, would make it the best value streaming device.

I picked up a chromecast + googletv for 40 dollars at best buy, why bother?

I have yet to see an Onn device that suffices as even a budget model.

In stock at my local Walmart. HDR always on can be a deal breaker for some. I really want that remote for my chromecast with google tv

Whelp - thanks for the warning and not letting me replace my aging Nexus Player with this 👍🏿

It has the same issues as dynalink tv box, made by the same OEM. The remote on this is better. Dynalink is expected to release a update some time in June. I am thinking this should also get a update around the same time.

Well, after reading the article, I'm not sure if this $30 Onn 4K Android TV is ready for prime time.

I still might buy one to test, whenever it becomes available for purchase at Walmart, with the HOPE that future firmware updates will solve the issues.

We'll see...

How about $40 and add usbc, exfat. There is a market for shield knockoffs I'm sure.

I don't own an android tv and for $30 having this kicking around just to test stuff on and tinker with would be nice.

Ok just bought this $30 on box. And I cannot load spectrum tv app onto it. It's shows it is not available. Well, spectrum's app says it's compatible with Android streamers. Any way to get it to load? I can't load spectrum app on the Roku due to an impasse, and now this? I didn't have to buy the $50 google Chromecast to make this work. Right?

I replaced three of my ailing miboxes with these last month and they work perfectly with all the main streaming apps and Tivimate. I think Onn rebadged the Dynalink boxes some Walmart stores sold last summer. Definitely prefer this over GoogleTV which I tried for a week and wasn't a fan of. Can't beat the price either.

Today my HBOmax button stopped working. When pressed It will turn on the TV but will go to the home screen when it used to go directly to the HBO app. When the TV is on and it's pressed, it just doesn't do anything. Restarted device, took batteries out, un pair/re pair, nothing has worked. The remote was a big selling point for me since I use every app listed there, this is a major disappointment. I wonder what happened.

Is the remote WiFi?
