New Sony TV. Checking permissions and found this. What's Shell app and why does it have Special Permissions allowed out of the box by default? It's using the default android app icon and thought it was sketchy...any info appreciated.

Shell provides debugging functions such as bug reporting & heap collecting, as well as adb screenshotting. these all used to be part of Settings but they were split out into a separate app a few years ago, probably for security.

The shell is the GUI, it's what you're using right now to view that setting. If you were to turn that setting off I presume you wouldn't be able to turn it back on because the shell would no longer have permission to turn on... the shell.

Every single Android TV device (running 9+; that special permissions panel wasnt a thing before that) has the same; including Shield and "Chromecast with Google TV".

The shell is what you see and interact with on your TV aka GUI - Graphical User Interface.
