If you have the new Chromecast with Google TV: are the thumbnails for movies and shows regularly in another language?

by CoreyVidal

I live in Canada and I speak English.

I got a Chromecast with Google TV right when they were first released. Since the beginning, it's pretty common for the thumbnails on the main screen to be in another language.

Here's an example.

I've seen a lot of what looks like Spanish and German. It's not only 1 language.

I reached out to Google TV support, which wasn't helpful. They told me to use my remote and say "send feedback" to the Google Assistant. I have sent feedback nearly every day for half a year on dozens of shows and movies. There's 0 evidence that it's going anywhere or that anyone cares.

Does this happen to others?

Have you poked around in your Google account settings using a web browser? Maybe you have language set to English (UK) or some other English variation that isn't US or CAD. Typical Google though to just leave you in the lurch with no resolution. This should have been an easy problem to solve on their end.

Strangely I noticed this happen to me today with a movie. First time I've noticed it since launch. Maybe just a recent bug that'll hopefully be fixed soon.

I'm in the UK and the language looked Swedish.

I get this if I set the language to English (Ireland). If I set it to English (UK) then I get the art cover from the movie. You can maybe try to set English (us)

Had same problem. Changed language from English(Canada) to English(United States) and the problem went away. Why? No idea but obviously the chromecast or Google has an issue distinguishing between the various English languages ... at least Canada :)
Also, by making this changes, all the pictures for movies seem to be corrected. What I mean is that the theatrical movie pictures now are shown rather than a scene from the movie.

Google added support for spanish a few days back for the UI, but it should only happen when you select "Spanish US" in the device's settings, could you check that?

You should be set on English US.

FeelingGate8

Odd. I've never seen that myself. Are you using a VPN of any sort?

Thank you, I guess I'm not the only one :o

They often show a thumbnail in Spanish for some reason, and my system language is set to English (Canada)..

Nowhere in my Google account I have Spanish set in my settings, I don't even speak Spanish..

In the England the Justice League Snyder Cut thumbnail has a very 'Munsters' looking, thin green text under it, albeit in English at least.

Generally speaking though, from what I've seen over the years, the presentation of the Google Play and Google TV offerings is simply put: crap. Sorry. It just really is.

I'm sure the Studios/publishers wouldn't be pleased. I don't know what's going on.

The buggering issue I have is the loss of thumbnails on some shows and my library Movies. They just appear green.

This showed up in my google search 180 days later and can confirm if anyone else is trying to fix this problem - change your TV language option. I switched it to ENGLISH (UK) and it got rid of the Spanish titles on the thumbnails in GoogleTV home.

It has nothing to do with Google Account setting. It’s a TV issue.
