Shield TV 2015 vs Chromecast with Google TV

by simas00

The title says it all. I know they are two very different devices but essentially I can get a second hand Shield for roughly the same price as a Chromecast. Should I go for the older Shield or the new Chromecast?

1000% get the Shield before it's sold. I've had all 3 shields and the new Chromecast. I don't recommend the Chromecast to anyone who has the ability to purchase a Nvidia Shield.

Love both devices but if you can get the shield for $50 used that's a steal.

I have both and can echo the previous comments. Shield all the way if you can afford it. Although I do like the new Chromecast remote you can't beat the functionality of the shield

Go for it!

Go with the shield if it is the model with a hard drive lookup replacing the drive with an SSD

The shield is a better device, but I think I would like to know how used it is.

I think there are many users now finding the shield running laggy or slow (especially compared to what they are used to) after using it as a console and media device for X amount of years. Factory resets didn't really help, except for maybe an hour afterwards.

If it is possible to try it out for an hour etc. Then do that.

Shield hands down. Not really much of a comparison.

Ok, I think the Shield wins. Thanks for all the input. Just to clarify I won't be getting a used Shield for 50$ but where I live the difference between a new Chromecast or a used Shield is not that big hence my question.

The Shield has fantastic hardware. Unfortunately, not worth more for your price. Nvidia does not really provide regular updates. Streaming standards from HDR10+ to Dolby Vision to AV1 or VP9.2.
The great AndroidTV Experience Launcher is also blocked.

Chromecast with GoogleTV uses current standards despite weak hardware and includes the really good Google TV Launcher. All my streaming services directly on the home page for movies / series belabelt, so that I immediately know. This is included in my subscription. Also quick help to actors and in which movies / series they participated with the direct indication again at which of my streaming providers included ne great thing.

Unlike fireTV you are not animated here in the 1st place to buy / rent, because as I said you can see where the content is included where. Let alone the watchlist where you can see directly. Ah Content A is now available from provider XY.

I would not buy a used Shield from a private party. You are taking too much of a chance. If it's a refurbished model from a reputable retailer that comes with a warranty then yes, but otherwise no.
