Google has started forcing ads on the home screen of Android TV. There is no way to disable them. My Android TV screen is now a billboard for services I'm not interested in.

Install another launcher. In settings find the about section, locate your build number. Click on your build number seven times, this will enable developer options. Once this is done, back out . You will see a new setting(developer options). Go in and enable usb debugging. Once this is done, you can disable AndroidTVHome using adb. you can very easily find a tutorial online, so I'm leaving that to you. This will solve your issue as well as allow you a little freedom for customization.

I suggest you writing a review on the product page of your android tv manufacturer and also here (app responsible): https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.tvlauncher

MinutesFromTheMall

Uninstall the home-screen app updates, then disable auto updates completely.

andion82

I got the update one month ago and maybe overreacted on twitter.. https://twitter.com/bugyou/status/1366517821837082625

Not really. FUCK THEM

wellthatwasrandomaf

Thats annoying. Basically copying amazons fireTV

bmn001

Any luck with a pi-hole?

xunh01yx

Install DNS66. It's free, open source, and it blocks ads. I haven't seen any ads on mine yet.

Auknix

my firestick 4k is full of ads lately, while my shield is nice and basic. I was thinking of buying another shield and chucking the firestick. However I won't be buying anything with forced ads.

I use adguard DNS but it doesn't seem to help the firestick at all since it's likely all hosted internally.

AnythingFirm

I am not sure if this would be an option in the smart tvs but on the new chromecast you can change the menu to "apps only mode" and all the adds go away but it locks all the apps to be able to rearrage and add more you need to re enable the full menus

WasedaWalker

It's seasonal/topical - what are your top 5 apps that you'd like to go to without seeing recommendations like this?

scrytch

Hate to say it… but I’m buying the new Apple TV - at least there’s no ads.

papin97

I wish I can swap places with you. You live in a country with this support, I don’t. I want recommendations, you don’t.

EaggRed

Most wont even look at the promotions just as we ignore the ads on most social media and most news web sites today.

kurmudgeon

What device are you using?

I have the Nvidia Shield Pro 2015 version. This google ad home screen update caused a boot loop. Had to factory reset from the boot recovery menu. Lost all my settings... Thanks Google for your intrusive BS.

lts_talk_about_it_eh

They just showed up on my Nvidia Shield today. FUCK that shit. I didn't get a subsidized price on this thing, to allow ads. I paid full price, I OWN this piece of technology. I hate forced ads like this.

FreeTuckerCase

Was thinking about ditching YTTV, but this makes me want to quit the whole program and go to OTA only.

FDisk80

Just switch to HALauncher.

Megabyte7637

Sucks.

There is some ways to force it to disable.. You have to use some way of DNS filtering (pihole ou adguard) and enforce your router to the redirect all of de DNS Traffic to pihole.

That circumvent the well known hard coded DNS servers on Google apps, but you maybe no be able to do it with you ISP router. You'll need a more advanced and unblocked router like Mikrotik or Draytek with an integrated firewall to archive this.

Maybe I'm just older than the average person here but I remember a time in the US...lasting, oh, about 50 years...when the only way you could watch television without ads was to leave it on PBS 24 hours a day (and even then you'd get bumpers for the Carnegie Foundation and endless telethons every few months) or pay a fortune for HBO. And they were blocks of two and three minutes at a time that you couldn't even skip through until we all got VCRs in the 80s and DVRs in the 2000s.

This is literally the equivalent of a billboard that you pass on the highway, which keeps them churning out about 4000 times more content then was ever available when we there were three networks, or four networks, or even 50+ commercial cable networks.

If you want content agnostic, get a Roku, I have one. But yes, there will still be ads. Anyone who pays as little as we pay for content these days should know by now that you are the good being sold. Not saying it's a moral good or a moral evil, but it is what it is. Your other option is to use an antenna but...oh, yeah. Commercials. (Or stay on PBS. Brought you to by a grant from Citicorp.)

It hadn't happened in my tv in India ,but they'll soon add this in india , sad 😣

Revolutionary-Tea265

any news on this issue? I have 5 devices in the same situation. I miss android tv clean interface

NuMotiv

I like it. Gives me suggestions. I also like google tv where all my shit is in one screen.

fat_stig

I never use the home screen, rarely watch live TV, Emby, Netflix and Kayo can be accessed from the APPS button. Normally the TV is used as monitor for the HTPC.

mightymichelob

Wonder if it will let you install Blokada and its built-in VPN. I get about 90% fewer ads on my Android TV box. Not sure about Android TV.

ECKoBASE

Could be worse, could look like the Chromecast with Google TV Layout 🤦‍♂️

crogs571

Oh no, the horrors. A company known for making money off of advertising and personal information gathering. Who would've thought? 🙄

You're under the misguided impression that this is your personal device, and these companies are here to provide their service free of charge.

Being a little facetious here, but it's still the truth. There is no perfect platform that is ad free. So pick your poison and the least of the evils.

Or, go third party launcher and live with just icons circa 1990's palm pilot but with a pretty background of your choice. And lose all the other conveniences if you like the aggregated recommended content or app specific rows if still on Android tv.

Or, the really difficult and trying solution, hit the down button once or twice. Problem solved.

kongacute

I think that normal. All things now focus on service which must have ads to increase profit. It just about how the service provider manage their ads delivered to client. Like Apple, they making ads but mostly no complaint from client.

So, learn to live with it or build your own service, use open source thing.

totodee

There are several ways to disable their new home screen. Stop scaring people. The easiest way is to use another launcher.

a-haan

OMG an ad!

cantwejustplaynice

Hmm, seems more like a content recommendation than an ad even if some are gonna be sponsored. I like having stuff promoted to me. If someone's willing to pay just to tell me it exists, my guess is it must have some merit.

tonymurray

Wow, I'm ready for my negative karma, but you guys are a bunch of babies.

Your tv vendor changed it, not Google. Google probably offered them revenue share... What do you expect to happen?

For me a lot of times the banner is relevant. Advertising new shows on services I already pay for.

desertfoxz

They aren't ads, that's the whole point for Google smart tv's. Buy another product that doesn't run Android TV because it always be a Google product. My Sony Bravia finally has revelant shows. If I wanted a dumb TV I would have bought one.
