Whenever the hdmi cable is connected the volume (audio out jack) of the box is low. If I remove the hdmi cable the volume increases! (I use external speakers, not TV)

Dumb question, but should you only be using the HDMI cable? It handles both audio and video. Are you saying you have HDMI and audio jack plugged in simultaneously? If so, wonder if that may be causing your low audio issue, as maybe it is splitting audio resource? Just spit-balling here...
