Rooting Verizon Stream TV Android box?

by ws4ttg

I recently received a Verizon Stream TV box. And I do not like the bloat ware installed or the system branding.

Is there a way to reset it to a default Android OS? Like the one on my Sony TV with Android?

I don’t know anything specific about the device other than the model number on the box being: ASK-STI6220. And it is running version 10, kernel version 4.9.180.

Any help is appreciated.

I would rather buy a Chromcast than use ISP provided hardware.

IMO it's still way better looking than what TMobile did with their TVision dongle -- at least Verizon kept their design organized and uncluttered.

You don’t need to root to debloat

I own the first gen box of that, running on Android 9/Pie. Got it free as part of new Gigabit Internet service.

I haven't debloated anything to reduce bloat. Instead I've exhaustively gone through all of the preinstalled apps and disabled a few of them. In my case, I've disabled Camera, Gallery, Google Play Movies & TV and YouTube Music. I probably could disable more system apps (like contacts storage), but this is enough for me.

I've been trying to customize this box over ADB like I did with the Gen 1 Version (Android 9). However, every time I push a new home screen launcher (like Google TV or the stock tv launcher), the box immediately factory resets itself. Does this have something to do with the Android TV 10 operator tier? Has anyone else pushed a new launcher to this device instead of the hideous Verizon launcher?
