Hands-on: SideClick adds a universal remote to Chromecast with Google TV

What a Frankenstein monster is this? 😂

The only thing the stupid chrome tv remote doesn't do for me is switch input. It would bring up the menu but it doesn't have an Ok or enter button that works.

The Chromecast remote works perfectly for me, but it's the slippiest piece of plastic I've ever held. Literally flies out of my hand if I'm not careful.

Sad thing is that the Google remote already has the necessary functionality, it's just missing the buttons. Minimalist remotes used to be for geriatric users.

Is this for the peasants without HDMI-CEC?

Struggling to see the point. Several of the buttons are already present on the Chromecast's own plus doesn't everybody have so many remotes that a better one-for-all solution already exists?

I have one of these for my Roku remote - works great. It helped with a few commands that I couldn't do, plus controls for my air conditioner. Super easy to program.

Won't work for us left-handers. Too bad, as with a little forethought it seems like the HF design could have been configured for left or right hand usage.

Cool! I somehow wish they had a version for the Mi Box, as that's what I use*. I probably could try getting a Fire TV version and hoping for the best, but I'd rather not take the risk, and to be fair, there's also those Chinese no-name universal remotes that have 6 or 7 buttons and is somewhat shaped like a stick.

The only TV controls Android TV set-top boxes seem to have is through CEC, so it can turn my TV on and off, but changing the volume does it on the box rather than the TV.

I wish I could develop a utility that takes advantage of the interfaces some TVs (at least Samsung and/or LG models) have for external control without an IR remote (like when they're connected to some hotel headend systems, then the TV remote in the room would control the headend system which in turn controlled the TV) , and use those interfaces to allow Android TV set-top boxes to take control of the TVs they're connected to. However, due to Android security, I wouldn't be able to fully integrate it, but rather, it'd show up as an app and a channel row, and would also run as an accessibility service.

*(on my bedroom TV, which is an older LG TV, and my user flair is in reference to my living room TV. Prism+ offers a Q55 but not a Q32, and if they were to do so, I hope they don't use a crappy "HD Ready" display panel and instead use a 1080p or better panel!)

I just want my Nexus Player Remote to pair with my chromecast.

I'm hoping the ir on this is better than on the CCWGTV remote. My TCL 4 series tv doesn't respond to the chromecast remote and it's sooooo annoying

I just got it and am very impressed. Actually eliminated 2 remotes. Tried to do it all with my LG "Smart Remote," but that didn't work - especially voice commands - even if you're in the Chromecast search section, the remote thinks you wanna talk to the TV, no matter what :-(

Still need the LG remote for TV settings and sleep mode and whatnot, and because it's Bluetooth, I don't think there's any easy way around that. The TV should still accept IR, but since the remote is Bluetooth, I don't know how to program the Sideclick...

As a little update, I figured out how to send remote commands from my LG "Smart Remote" to the Sideclick - unplug the TV first! Apparently this forces the remote to send out IR commands (backup) instead of the usual RF commands, and now EVERYTHING works from this one tiny remote! I couldn't be more thrilled.
