Why does android TVs come with low storage space?

by sn3krfan

My Mi TV has just 8GB of storage space and half of it was already used up by the OS and pre-installed apps. I have an OS update and app updates pending. Why doesn't manufacturers make TV with higher storage space?

Xiaomi Mí TV 65" also have 16GB and Netflix certification.

There are multiple reasons for low storage, the same happens in smartphones.

  • Memory is "expensive" related to the rest of the hardware in an Android TV.
  • Android TV gets profits from premium streaming services, not local media storage.
  • Your device will get outdated due to storage space and you will buy a new one.

I would say that Nvidia Shield is the exception, they respect their product and their customers with firmware updates and hardware designed to last.

one word: price

Manufactorers are trying really hard to cut out any non essential feature to decrease the retail price. Competition is very hard in the environment.

Furthermore there is no reason for more space, no one stores video in the memory, you either stream from the web or use an external drive.

It is definitely something to consider for TV manufacturers. My Sony X930 E has only 8GB storage which is quite inadequate. Yes, you can work with 8GB with mostly all the primary apps installed but with the range of apps available on Android platform and all the possibilities you can easily run out of space. I think they should at least provide 16Gb. Unfortunately the shared external storage just doesn’t work too well with Sony TVs.

I've been suspecting that Netflix was somehow limiting the Android TV devices where they provide the certification to 8GB of internal memory, if you take a look to every single Android TV box and television where the service is available only have that amount of memory whereas the ones without the certification have 16GB and more.

The only recent device I know with a Netflix certification that has more than 8GB is the Directv Go box released in Chile.
