Andoird tv - VPN app

by phivs

Hi all!

Thinking of buying a tcl andoid tv (p717) but i want to see if my vpn provider app can be directly downloaded on the tv! i.e. if the tv has full play store access..

I basically want a TV that can have my vpn installed on it for accessing netflix and internet browser directly (not through a pc or smartphone use) and of course being able to change servers while on it for switching content.

Did anybody follow through this procedure to advise me or even any other recommendations would also be much appreciated!

Thanks!

You will almost certainly be able to find a way to do what you want. Whether or not your specific VPN provider has an app that is optimized to work on a TV screen is the only real unknown here, and if it does not, it is very possible that you can configure the OpenVPN or WireGuard Android apps to support your provider. Neither of those are really perfect for a TV screen, but both work.

Another option is to set the VPN up on your router, if it supports this. That way, you don't have to bother with putting the VPN on the TV, and you don't have to constantly double check to make sure the VPN is on every time that you want to use it. Some routers give you tremendous flexibility doing this, like, if using an Asus router running Merlin, you can install the custom routing script. That will do things like route based upon what you are watching. For instance, many content providers like Netflix and Amazon refuse to work through a VPN, so the selective routing script can bypass Internet for those providers, and route through VPN for everything else. Or vice versa, if you are specifically using the VPN for bypassing geo restrictions.

You have lots of options, it is just a question of which is best for you.

I have no problem doing this with TorGuard. There are also many others who have apps available. Shouldn't be an issue

Don't know about TCL in particular but on philips it's a bet everytime you turn the vpn app on, ethernet is not supported and wifi is generally crap
