Why would you want to turn it off??? Backdrops and Canvas are some of the best parts of Spotify imo.

I agree Spotify backdrops are low resolution, crap
They had great high quality artwork and they use the low quality garbage. Spotify don't have any taste.
I use an Android TV box which has an independent audio output, together with a dumb TV. The audio output goes straight to an amp and some speakers. So I can just turn off the TV when using music streaming services that show album cover art.
Solved. Change now playing to lyrics mode
Install Project M and then control music from there while you have some nice visualizations
Play a different mix.
Background play is possible in Spotify?
Uninstall Spotify.
