DNS Leak with Android TV

by E39er

Hi All,

With a VPN Installed on every other device, DNS Leak doesn't show anything, all good.

Just thought I'd try the VPN on the TV and when you do a DNS Leak test it brings up loads of google servers as well as the VPN ip, instead of the one single VPN IP.

Why is this, what can I do to stop that happening?

I did it via Puffin but other browsers don't seem to want to run the test or work very well at all in general?

Android 9 on new Sony X900H TV.

Any help appreciated, thank you.

Most if not all google hardware has hard coded google dns servers that will ignore the ones handed out via dhcp and use instead.

Best way to "fix" this is to have a local resolver on your network (such as a pi-hole - /r/pihole) and a router where you can program a dnat rule to redirect port 53 to your pi-hole server.

That is until DNS over HTTPS gets implemented by IoT device makers, and your dnat rule is no longer effective.
