Philips tv sound hollow on Disney+?

by euphomptus

I have a Philips 4K TV, version 9 (this is the info in the About menu but I'm sure I'll need more specifics). Running Disney+ in its app (i.e. not from Chromecast) through the TV's speakers (i.e. no surround sound or anything), the audio is off, like the characters are stuck in a bottle. Other apps (Netflix/Hulu/PBS Kids/sports streaming) don't seem to have the same problem. This seems to be Disney+ encoding their audio differently than my TV wants to receive it, but I don't know what to do to fix it and taking guesses at the Digital Output setting or messing with the EQ don't seem to help.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

Disney Plus has only one audio codec for all the audio languages (unlike Netflix that has one AAC stereo track and one Dolby Digital Plus for each language), , that audio codec is Dolby Digital Plus, so, if the TV has a Dolby Audio licence (nearly all has it), it will decode it and output that as stereo through your TV speakers, otherwise no audio will be output.

If you are going to use a home theater with HDMI-ARC support, you should output that codec from the TV to the HT as well, provided the HT has decoding for that audio codec, otherwise, you'll need to check the TV audio settings and select Dolby Digital as the codec to be output through the ARC port and SPDIF.

I have the same issue. I have a Sharp Aquos 4k uhd smart tv and disney plus is the only app with that low quality audio. Exactly as you said, sounds like hollow dialogue, as if the characters were speaking into a bottle. I've tried everything and i think it has nothing to do with dolby sorround or stereo output. Something's wrong with the app and uninstalling it and reinstalling it doesn't seem to fix it.
