Getting my synology ds218+ Nas to work with My Android TV

by Nummy01

Hey guys, hope you are well amongst the madness. So I have a ds218+ which has a load of docker images running such as plex and Jellyfin. Now I have been getting choppy playback with anything that is H.265 encoded and h.264 is fine. So looking at the NAS performance it seems it can't cope with it, so I bought and android TV box. How do I get it to do the work rather than the NAS.

I have the very same NAS and a 2019 Nvidia Shield Pro. Had a really hard time at first getting everything to play ball. Updated my Video Quality settings to Adjust automatically = OFF and Home Streaming = Maximum. Now everything works like a charm. Running the Plex server directly from the NAS. The problem I was having was that the Shield was trying to encode my files instead of playing them at original quality. If your AndroidTV can handle H.265 files as is then this should hopefully fix you up.

My android TV plays h265 absolutely fine, even relatively high bit rate files like 50gb files

The only time my plex server tries to transcode is when the auto is dolby true HD or one of the more advanced audio codecs (which tend to be present on high quality h265 rips). I just select the dolby digital soundtrack instead.

Have you checked its not the audio?

I hope you bought a Shield pro, because that's the only thing that can run a plex server.
