(Mi Box 3) All video apps freeze on first second of playback after waking up from sleep

by tanagoBG

Device is Xiaomi Mi Box 3

After a while of inactivity/sleep each video playback app freezes on first second - YouTube, Twitch, TV stream app. Sound is gone from the whole device (maybe the cause why apps freeze). Only workaround is to restart... basically every time prior I want to use the Android TV

Problem started occuring after the second update of Android 9, after the initial upgrade I didn't have this problem.

Tried factory reset - didn't fix it.

Waiting for a fix...

THIS! My god has this been frustrating me! Any fixes besides keeping the device awake?

Same problem : video freeze on first second. How Xiaomi can propose this kind of shame update !

I don't want to atempted a downdrading. I hope that Xiaomi will fix that quickly !

aca_coa

I wanna throw it through the window since I clicked that UPDATE 2 days ago.

Losing sound on everything, doesn't want to play videos, only way to get it back is to restart box.

Just to be clear, no sound and/or video stops: Kodi, Netflix, Youtube, playing videos from network PC, etc.

How i solved this :

  1. Pushed the beta update to the MI Box from here https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/official-stock-firmware-thread-mi-box-mdz-16-ab-and-mdz-22-ab.4241475/
  2. format a 4gb pen drive and rename the downloaded firmware to update.zip
  3. restart mi box into bootloader and update.

My MiBox is working ok now even after a long sleep - no video freezing issues.

Note: No need to downgrade , just upgrade to the latest beta.

Anyone knows if Xiaomi are planning to issue a fix soon, or should I go ahead with the downgrade?

MetallicDaniel

Same issue here. It's been like 2-3 months since the update. I wonder if Xiaomi are planning on fixing this.

Major_Shepherd_86

Can we do a petition to Xiaomi.. Does anyone have a link on where to write to them?

Dokolovski

I have the same problem with the same device, it’s pretty bad to see that factory reset didn’t fix the problem

Busy-Candidate-8542

EXACTLY the same here. :( Started two days ago after 2nd Android 9 update. Reboot helps but it's driving me crazy!! Any fix?

Healthy_Onion79

EDIT: this worked once for me then i was not able to reproduce it...

Here is a possible workaround:

  • go to settings / device preferences
  • display / HDR to SDR
  • select On

After this at least youtube freezes are gone for me.

legbreak_18

I have the exact same problem on my mi box after installing the latest OS upgrade

Alright, I've fixed this issue by downgrading my Mibox3 back to Oreo R2167. I followed these instructions , HOWEVER I should add some details that the instructions don't clarify.

  1. You will need a USB A male to USB A male cable, one like this . As you most likely don't have one of these kicking around, you'll need to make one or buy it. If you want to make it, just find two cables you don't care about, like some old mini or micro USB cables, snip off the mini/micro USB ends, and join together the four pairs of cables inside, insulating them with some tape so they don't make contact. It doesn't need to be perfect, it just needs to work.
  2. You need to extract the 'MIBOX3_OREO_R2167_UPDATE.zip' file so that it is just the 'update.zip' and 'xiaomi_update' files going on to your USB stick (formatted in FAT32)
  3. I think when you're following the instructions in step 1, you shouldn't click 'Start' where it tells you. For me that led to some weird behavior and some things got done our of order. I think you should press 'Start' at the end of Step 3 and wait to see if it starts to upload the image right there, and if it doesn't, do what the beginning of Step 4 tells you to do.
  4. If you end up following the instructions as provided and things go differently let me know and I can walk you through what to do, since I had to figure things out the hard way.

Yes, seeing the same thing. Also, twice I've had the freeze become permanent (still shows same first frame, controls still work), fixed by reboot.

Edit: ah, you're referring to the second case. The other thing I get is a big lag for about a second after the first frame of video.

This has been driving me crazy since I updated my box, can we expect a bugfix since its pretty widespread?

pavichokche

Factory reset doesn't do the trick, I'll try to downgrade it back to the last Oreo build. I had 0 issues on that one, I should have never upgraded. I'll report back.

Luyano1

Waiting for fixes , same at 21/02/15 for my mibox s and mi box 3

iluvs2fish

I'm sure I'm completely wrong about it but does it have anything to do with Adobe Flash Player no longer supported after 12/31/2020? As of Jan 5th all my older apps & videos on my Samsung android cell stopped working. I recall Steve Jobs announcing in 2010 Flash would go away in 2020. Appears it has...and now I guess I must read up on 5html...

Go into settings and enable cec. Read on another link and it fixed video play after waking. Simple fix

thomassinn

Same problem here

fisolle

This is so annoying. Why is there no fix yet?

anupdebnath

I am having the same problem for I don't remember how long now. Maybe before the covid. However, I have both Mi Box 3 and 4/S. It only happened to my Mi Box 3.

XHSKR

The issue still persists. Android version is 9 and my device is mi box 3 global

Smroot71

Sometimes the simple solution is the easiest solution. Playing around. Trying to figure this out. I finally figured it out. Works perfect. 4 days now and still working flawless. Enough. Turn off sleep mode. Directions.... main Home Screen. Go to settings. Scroll down to device preferences. Scroll down to screen saver. Scroll down to put device to sleep. Click never. Back out of setting to Home Screen and enjoy. I’ve been so happy since. You will be too. 👍

Pocoshooter

Mi box 4k also have this problem

baxbong

New firmware has been pushed through OTA for Mibox 3. Just search for updates and download it.
