Chromecast or Mi Stick, which has the longer range?

by vanitas14

So I have a Gen 1 chromecast and I think either something is wrong with it or the shared wifi signal in my apartment is too weak because it often connects for like 30 seconds and then disconnects from the network.

Either way, I'm getting a new casting device and I'm wondering which would be better at receiving my apartment's shared wifi considering the wifi extender is quite far.

I doubt it would matter. There is no substitute for getting closer to the access point. Either will probably have better wifi than a 1st gen Chromecast though..Does that thing even have 5ghz wifi on it.

If you're connecting a Chromecast to a shared WiFi, aren't you at risk of anyone on the network just casting stuff to your device?!?

Mitigate that issue and fix your current connectivity issues by buying yourself a little travel router like those made by GL.inet. Connect THAT to your shared WiFi and then connect all your personal devices to the new WiFi network it creates. Place it somewhere where it can connect to the shared WiFi with as good a signal as possible whilst giving your devices good coverage on its network.

FWIW, I'd choose a Chromecast over a Mi Stick. The new Chromecast with Google TV is a great little device.

Chromecast Ultra has an ethernet power adaptor in the box. In other words, you could hard wire it to get rid of the WiFi issues.
