Philips Ambilight/Screen control with Google Home ?

by moukrea

Hi there,

I've tried (assuming it was an embedded feature) to turn off my TV screen (not the TV itself) to listen to music using Google Home, and it turned off my TV... In the same fashion, I also tried to enable/disable Ambilight, but it didn't work either.

My TV name is "TV OLED" and I tried the following commands (in French though):

Ok Google, turn off TV OLED screen
Ok Google, turn on TV OLED screen
Ok Google, turn off Ambilight on TV OLED
Ok Google, turn on Ambilight on TV OLED
Ok Google, disable Ambilight on TV OLED
Ok Google, enable Ambilight on TV OLED

None of these commands have worked, is there a way? As I plugged my Shield TV on it, I don't want to use multiple remotes... As the Shield remote as no button to turn off the screen not control Ambilight, I thought this could be a nice alternative but... No luck

Did someone manage to do it ? (Of course I can turn on/off my TV either by turning TV OLED or Shield TV on/off with voice commands, but I want more control)

Alexa has a skill for it, however it only works when Alexa app is opened on my phone as I don't have an echo device...

If only there was a way to trigger an Alexa command from Google Home!

with my LG c9 I have to say "tell LG to turn the display off"

try using word display instead of screen.

So basically I've repurposed an old phone standing behind my living room Google Home and set routines in Home app to trigger Alexa commands. This is how it goes: "Ok Google, enable Ambilight" ... Google home replies "Alexa. Enable Ambilight"... My old phone ears it and says "Ok" while executing the command.

It's totally weird and overkill, but I don't use Alexa and nobody home has the habit to talk to Alexa, so Google can take over this way and it works pretty well but it's corky AF

Here's the command I can do now (I also set different way to trigger the same commands, as we don't always say the exact same sentence):

GHome: Enable Ambilight -> Alexa: Enable Ambilight (works with TV on and off, useful for some extra light in night time) |
GHome: Enable Ambilight Lounge -> Alexa: Enable Ambilight Lounge Light (TV On only, shows a custom color) |
GHome: Enable Ambilight video -> Alexa: Enable Ambilight video (TV On only obviously, follow video) |
GHome: Disable Ambilight -> Alexa: Disable Ambilight (works with TV on and off)

My old phone is set to automatically launch Alexa through Tasker and never locks or turn off screen (plugged into power) so it basically always listen to "Alexa" hot word (just like an Echo device)

For those who know Alexa, we just have to use its native commands (I will integrate all my connected stuff within it), else we can use Google just like we did before. The only thing I haven't figured yet is a way to turn off the screen but not the TV itself which I absolutely want to be able to do...
