The old Xbox 360 gamepads work wonderfully for me. I use them with a sideloaded stadia app on my Philips Android TV.
Pretty much any usb gamepad will work - even a PS4 wireless will work and it will work wired as well.
I've even bought cheap SNES knock-off style controllers on Amazon for my kid to play NES emulator and they work fine too - sometimes you need to map the controller within the emulator but its pretty easy.
